Apache Web servers, Q-Mail e-mail servers, My SQL databases and Clam anti-virus programmes are among the OSS applications used in Telkom.

On ftp://ftp.saix.net:
Telkom does mirror the complete Apache project.
There is a 2003 version of F-Prot. But no Clam.
There is a Redhat Linux 9. But that is obsolete. There is no Fedora or Ubunto.
There is no QMail.
There is no MySQL or PostgreSQL.

On ftp://ftp.is.co.za:
IS does mirror the complete Apache project.
There is no anti-virus.
Lots of Linux distributions. Includes the latest Fedora and Ubunto.
No QMail. There is Exim and Postfix.
MySQL And PostgreSQL.

Really, Telkom should not even mention opensource until it get ftp.saix.net fixed.

So much for Telkom promoting that local content eh?

Its about prestige and PR, so the man in the street (or man at desk pc user nowadays) thinks better of telkom

Guess Telkom does not know what software they actually are using.

not even the kernel

The welcome screen on telkoms ftp server states:

"Please inform us of any requests you have for us to host other mirrors

Enjoy your visit!"

I have asked the FTP admins on numerous occasions to mirror the Linux kernel archives, and everytime they make promises to do it.

It is now 2 years later and still no mirror...
Offcourse, the kernel.org mirror is available on IS's FTP site.

Please

Telkom just want people to spend more money on THEM!

And since when, may I ask, has Telkom given a f*** about small businesses?

You have to admire the way they can keep a straight face, promoting open source without even providing enough bandwidth to actually get any open source products.

We want you to download the Free software .. go ahead ... you can download 3GB of it for like R 350 for the 3 GB of bandwidth ... remember people ... it's freee !

And they can host the content on their own FTP servers thus reducing the international bandwidth used, brilliant really.

If Telkom is so for Open Source then how about setting up the country's first Sourceforge mirror to help promote local open source development. They're probably the only ones in the country that can afford to (since they control all the bandwidth).

IS ftp thing is always giving me irratic downloads, when updating my cygwin stuff, i can't imagine what it must be like to download a distro from my saix adsl account let alone costs

That what most of the @ssholes defending Telkom on this forum do not see. Everything internet was free prior to last Year Nov. Now not anymore. You pay to send a e-mail and the receiver pay again; if both use ADSL and both is in SA so if I send 3 gig worth of information my bandwidth is f@cked so are the receiver at the same time.
Thanks you Telkom Thieves!

Yup. It is cheaper to go out and buy XP, than download Fedora using Teklom ADSL (and MUCH faster as well).

To anyone over at M$ in SA, considering the monopoly that controls local and especially access to international internet, it would be a nice guesture if Windows|Microsoft Update could be locally mirrored in SA, and if that cannot be done then M$ SA should put in a local SUS server for people to update from locally. It's not like Bill Gates doesn't have enough disposable cash to provide such a local service - remember even your leader has cottoned onto the Open Source philosophy that providing services is more of a money-spinner than charging exorbitantly for bug-ridden s/w...

OMW ... so true ... and while you're at it - mirror MSN as well. It would be awesome to not have to wait 2:40 for the contents to load.

The idea of using Telkom and open-source in the same sentence is just rude.

So,
a) a company that rips the arse out of prices encourages using a free OS?
b) a company that is a monopoly encourages the use of software that is completely against the monopoly ideology?

The idea of OSS is 1) to avoid a monopoly situation where a market is dominated by one company 2) to offer free alternatives to expensive software so that people don't have to spend a fortune on software, and 3) CHOICE.

Telkom advocating open source is impiously irreverent.

This is hillarious!

In South Africa open source software is more expensive!

Someone please write a press release about this and send it off to every open source group and governement iniative in the country. Show the damage being done.

If you really want to see opensource in action and someone actually doing something about it to promote it, have a look at http://freedomtoaster.org/.

I've used this at the MTN Science Centre in Canal Walk and I must say, "hats off Mark!".
