So to my shock and horror I got a call from telkom yesterday telling me they will be round wednesday to install my ADSL!

I've been keeping track of the whole installation and I think I've been quite lucky.

What do you guys think?

Telkom ADSL information:

Order placed 23/08/05

Phone call from Telkom on 1/9/05 (no contract recieved by them)
Called 0800 456 786 on 2/8/05 (20minutes on hold, hung up)
Called 10219 spoke to Themia and was told no reciept of Fax
Re-faxed contract to 0800 203736 on 2/9/05
Spoke to Gail, on 0800 456 786 after 20 minutes again. Says to check on Wednesday. Tells me that line has been tested and space allocated on exchange. Also informs me of back log in area and most likely 31 working days for installation...

Get phone call in Bloem last friday. Tech will call monday to confirm date

Tech DOES call monday (cold day in hell obviously!)
Installation date: wed 14th sept.

We shall see if they arrive!

Hold fingers for me. (though of course I still have to assume the position on the table for the anal rape!)

All through the process I have sent numerous emails and phone calls to telkom chasing them. I'm ordering a business 512 line and have kept on about the need for it for my business to, well do business really! Maybe that has made it a little quicker? (of course I work from home so I have time to spend all day waiting listening to puke inducing muzak...)

Hold fingers for me. (though of course I still have to assume the position on the table for the anal rape!)

Yep, the time line seems good. Some people literally wait months from order to installation. Good luck to you for tomorrow’s installation – I surely hope all goes well and they pitch.

One thing though - hope you didn’t sign that dreadful 24 month contract with Telkom.

i have a question if u never signed anything and got adsl, does that mean u dont have a contract with them.

haha, you would think so wouldn't you?

Alas they called to say they never received the contract and wouldn't undertake the installation till then... :(

I could always say it wasn't me who signed it.. (when I got my National Insurance number in the UK there were quieries about my signature matching my passport one.. It changes styles often..)

Yes, and no. Sometimes they let you do the contract by phone. The easiest way to know though is - DID you get silly FREE stuff - like an ADSL modem or router. If you did, I'm afraid you have a 24 month contract.

still waiting

I'm still waiting for my DSL to get installed, if I have counted correctly I've been waiting for 3 months, so I suppose you are reallly lucky!!
hmm, guess I better disconnect 4rm the net now since Telkom is charging me an arm & a leg per minute

I have placed my order on the 25th of july, got hooked to my exchange port the 1st of Aug and on the 7th, my port disappeard and they had to install new ones...
I made in total over 25 calls now to hell, higher folks of hell in durban and CT, and now im back at where I was the 1st of Aug.. waiting for them to decide when to give me my tube 'o lube.
I asked them the other day what prevents them to give out my assigned port again, and they sed "i dont know" <- take that as a nothing
Oh, and am i alone if I say that everytime you phone them, you get a diffrent excuse?

Well, the tech arrived yesterday as promised and I was all sorted after 20mins..

Signed up with Webafrica (3 minutes total to get sorted!) and called Telkom to sort out an issue with the router (10 mins..) all sorted...

So I guess I lucked out, though the tech gave me a little heart attack when he says 'ooh don't know if this is going to work, you are far from the exchange...) I mean FFS, you guys 'tested' the line numerous times apparently...

Anyhoo, i'm now on ADSL, after a year of not having (since I left the UK) whoo....

I ordered my dsl on mon 5th of sept. see "do it yourself" thread.
I ordered a modem from an online site on the same day.

My line was ready etc on the 12th of sep.
Got my modem on the 14th (i mean wot r the chances i get dsl before my modem...neway)
Plugged it in, everything is fine.

I did put alot of effort into bugging them non stop etc.

Remember something...In life it is not what you know, its who you know, that is a fact.

I ordered on the 15th July, was only supposed to be installed end October but looks as if it could now be in at the end of this next week by the latest :D Have to wait and see... I've noticed though that the Telkom techs have started saying 'sir yes according to this you were told this information at [time] on [date]. Seems they record how often someone enquires about their order now O_o

Neverending installation

Hello all...

Applied for a telkom HomeDSL 512 line ( + new line since no existing phone line at site ) on August 1 2005, paid the R 1500 deposit they required and waited.....

Phoned once or twice during month to check status, they said do so again towards end of month. Started harassing then at end of august, they started going through a list of excuses....

From beginning of september I was phoning once a day, got the promise that in 3 or 4 days a technician will phone. Surprise surprise... no one phoned! Phoned again, said they dont have a contact number ( Bollocks! ) , and that now a techi will phone in 3 to 4 days.... again nothing!

Went into the stellenbosch branch on the 12th September and made the lady there phone and get a date...

Oh yes, they have a date.... the 4th November!!!!

How does it take 3+ months to connect a line ( wires are laid ) and make a adsl connection??!!!

They have put a comment that the installation date should be escalated... and that's all they can do... I should just keep phoning.... WTF!! Cant spend 3+ months of life on some public phone ( cause no telkom line at home.... ) to phone a helpdesk ( on hold for 20 minutes @ a time ) to hope that they can do it before then ... needed line at beginning of september!!

Does anyone know how I could possibly attract attention to my cause? Need the line badly... trusted they would have it done by beginning of september... now losing money daily!! Does anyone have other numbers I can phone, emails I can swamp.....addresses of telkom's high and mighty I can go bug??

Anything which will get the line done asap....

Who DO you know justinct??? sounds like just the info I need....

The dude works in CT, and only in a specific area, there is no way he will go to stellies.

Y do u want dsl neway, just hook urself up2 the stb network and ul have lan for gaming and 5 or 6 or more adsl line connected to the net? Its cheaper to lan than buy/use dsl.
If u rnt a student get a student to pretend he lives in ur house and then get them to install a network point, i think its R1200 or something.
100mb/s conn is better than any adsl connection, and you can get anything you need of that network.
