Telkom backhaul bandwidth - no upgrade

I have been a successful user of Telkoms 4Mb/s ADSL solution for 4 and a half years now. I used to live in Johannesburg North and generally enjoyed a pleasant and reliable service from Telkom. In June this year I moved to Bryanston and things just went downhill from there.

It appears that the all you can eat solutions from different ISP's are NOT good for the Telkom network and I am proof of this, my ADSL line has been running like a dial-up modem for the last 3 months, even at 5am on a week day and it's absolutely useless on a weekend, I can't even download a standard webpage in less than 3 minutes. I blame this on all the people in my alrea who are using Torrents to download material. After discussions with Telkom they have installed another 2 E1 lines in the DSLAM in the area and this has made no difference at all, and Telkom will NOT be performing any additional upgrades in the area to support the ADSL users there as it's not cost effective for them.

So I am left looking for an alternative and I am not a very happy person. Turns out the ICASA prevents Telkom from shapping Torrent users who have stuffed up the network for an entire suburb includinging business users in the area.

What makes you think it's the backhaul that's the issue and not just a crappy line?

Will the CellC 5Gb dongle work in your case?

R3000 once off for 12 months = R250 pm.

Works out way cheaper than telkom, and if you get 9Mbps and upwards speeds, you score.

Our TAM told me the DSLAM is running at 100% as there wasn't enough backhaul bandwidth available, that's why they added 2 more E1 lines. What they need is a fibre link and an upgraded DSLAM.

If you are linked directly to the exchange DSLAM then the backhaul links from the exchange to the cloud are already fibre.

If you are linked via a UMC to the Exchange then you could have a problem as many of those (UMC to Exchange) links are copper-based (depending on the type of UMC installed).

i hate torrents too but it's not quite fair that we give them all the blame, the majority of the mass downloaders have found far better ways to pull data anyway. we've speculated on DSLAM saturation, but i blame the 'get 10mb free if you upgrade to 4meg now' PR stunt. as there must be many more 4megabit users now as there were a year ago when it was considered a myth. anyway; posting your line stats and a tracert would help clear up weather it's a bad line or backhaul issue.

as for cell c. i admit it does look attractive, i just worry when a company without national coverage starts running their tv-ad several times each day. someone else (who shall remain nameless) did the same and look where they are today
