Telkom-Based FTTH in Cape Town

I've not updated this thread for a while, but Good news! Looks like Telkom has Finally started installing FTTH to Kuils River Area. They are starting with Zevenzicht Complex area.

I spoke to one of the contractors in the end of March while he was busy finishing up installation of Fibre into the ducts at Haasendal. He said it would be 1 -2 weeks until Telkom technicians *could* begin with FTTH installations. Sadly this was not the case and it seems the Fibre has just been laying there for the past 2½ Months:cry:

So close but yet so far...

I must say so too. I think it will be taking a lot longer for suburbs surrounding Haasendal/Zewenwacht to get FTTH. The infrastructure in these above suburbs are very new - they make use of conduits - whereas the surrounding areas has (as far as I know) the cables laid directly into the ground, so more trenching will be needed.

From our own experience in Welgelegen, I first saw cables being put in around February. When i spoke to Libby construction, they reckoned that they would be done with the area by 15 March. It took them until end of June to complete. Then our area went from light pink/purple to dark pink/purple. Applied with Telkom and after i went through the whole process, the computer said "no". When i went to my specific address on the dark pink/purple section and clicked on it, it only showed that we had slow adsl. When i clicked on Kleinbosch who had already gone live, it showed 100mbps fibre being available. I waited about 10 days, checking the map every day. The moment that it showed that we had 100mbps fibre, i could actually complete my application with Telkom. Telkom was ready to install within a week from application. However, have since cancelled Telkom (due to 24 month contract lock in) and have gone with ISPAfrika.

So Telkom installed my fibre yesterday. On a Sunday, yes. ON A SUNDAY!

I must say, it is impressively fast. Using Afrihost as my ISP, I burned through 1GB of data in the first 10 mins just doing speed tests. Downloads from all over the world max out at around 11.5MB/s during the day and at night.

Also installed my network yesterday, was an absolute shambles before.

That cabinet is so neat o_O

Did anyone else notice some contractors pushing fibre through some ducting today along the major part of Amandel Rd and also Church street?
I could clearly tell it's fibre cables, however it was green. As far a I know telkom's fibre cables are not green.

The trenching happened about 2-3 weeks ago, but I could see no evidence of telkom... I managed to take these pictures

FTTX & energy warehouse?

Can anyone shed some more light on this please? I unfortunately didn't have any time to talk to the contractors yet.
