Telkom-Based FTTH in Cape Town

Libby trenched through my garden go get to Telkom's pole in the corner for the fibre in the immediate area.

I finally got Telkom to come out for my fibre yesterday and they said that I must do one of two things:
A) Cut one of my trees down
B) Dig my own trench with conduit

In addition, they don't drill holes, I need to go that myself. Of course one of my housemates told me the above while I was at work so naturally I was fuming because they didn't tell me ahead of time.

To avoid delays, I dug the trench last night and put 25mm conduit in. Hopefully fibre arrives by the weekend.

Great news about you getting fibre, your going to have to enjoy it on my behalf :D

Thanks for the info though. I have often wondered how the fibre would come inside my house and i have seen many people on MyBB forums that said something about having to make you own trenches etc.

So Telkom installed my fibre yesterday. On a Sunday, yes. ON A SUNDAY!

I must say, it is impressively fast. Using Afrihost as my ISP, I burned through 1GB of data in the first 10 mins just doing speed tests. Downloads from all over the world max out at around 11.5MB/s during the day and at night.

Also installed my network yesterday, was an absolute shambles before.

Ah, Congrats man!

Looks like telkom is trying very hard to get some reputation back?

I'm so jealous of jou right now;) on my current speed 1GB takes about 1 hour @ full speed. Might I ask how much data you have with Afrihost. I suppose you'll be using nigtsurfer a lot too?

Also installed my network yesterday, was an absolute shambles before.

Those switches look nice.

Thanks for the pics btw.

The fibre is running from Haasendal and going up to Zevenwacht, I received an email from Zevenwacht Country Estate that FTTH will be finished by end of March.

You can see the installation being done up Langverwacht Road.

I went for the Afrihost 200GB package and got Afrihost+ as well, resulting in 400GB daytime data and uncapped night time. Already used 180GB last night!

Going to have to control housemates downloading though, 50GB of daytime has disappeared rather swiftly.

Telkom/Nokia Fibre?

Does anyone know anything about these guys with Nokia IDs walking around scoping out properties and claiming they're doing surveying for Telkom fibre? (Tamboerskloof)

Has anyone here had experiences with Telkom in Plattekloof 4, Parow, Cape Town. I'm moving to a security estate but none of the owners have Fibre yet, thus I can't get a good benchmark of timelines (turnaround time).

Coverage maps and call centers indicate that I can order and thus I have. One thing they all seem to disagree on is turn around time. In the first week agents said "up to 3 weeks". This is week 3 and it's now "up to 4 weeks", given the trend I'm expecting them to tell me in week 4, "up to 5 weeks". Does Telkom not want me to recommend fibre to my neighbors?

All I know is that from the time the Telkom map becomes pink/light purple to the time the same part of the map turns dark/purple takes generally up to 6 months.

EDIT: Meaning that receiving Fibre to YOUR home can take up to 6 months since inception

Map is dark purple already. i.e. The digging and laying should have been completed and Fibre should be right outside?

That sucks:( I found out that Telkom sometimes like to wait before they do an install - despite the fact that FTTH lines are at your door. This can be due to many factors but the most common probably being that the backhaul line for the FTTH connections is not installed yet.

Inertia had a similar problem, see his post/thread

As above, when I ordered, Telkom hadn't even run the backhaul cable. They ran it a week after I ordered - through my garden to the pole in the corner of the garden.

It took 2 months to get mine live.

Good news is that today I got a line telephone number so I can give them a better idea of where I live. I think the physical address was confusing them. It's been 1 month since my order for fibre was placed and today when I called web africa they were a bit shaken that I had not received any communication on my order yet. They advised that I call them again tomorrow to find out what the situation is.

Technically speaking, whats's the difference between a Telkom-based FTTH installation vs what Century City Connect offers?

I don't know much about them, but from the looks of it, it seems that they deploy fibre connectivity to both business and residential on an open fibre network.
So for one you are able to choose any ISP.

The deployment process would be the more or less the same as Telkom I suppose. Digging trenches for back-haul or FTTP and sending an fibre installation team to connect your home/business to fibre via a CPE.

It seems they are only available in Century City atm. Would love to hear from someone that has had personal experience with them?

Haha - I lived in Century City a year ago - and Century City Connect basically must be some kind of money laundering thing or something. They certainly DONT want any customers. I pursued them for 6 months just trying to give them my money, but they simply weren't interested. No idea why?! They even had a big billboard up saying why not get fibre, but the contact details didn't work. Strange company...

I think Century City Connect is only two guys, so they are just possibly overworked.

What complex? It seems like an all or nothing affair, i.e your body corporate has to buy into it, they can't rollout to an individual household or apartment.

Did you email them or try only via their website contact form? I also found it didn't work, only a phone call and email got the ball rolling.

Perhaps, they sub-contract the work out...
