Telkom bill explanation

Hi

I signed up with Telkom for the sole purpose of renting my ADSL line only. I wanted to get the Mweb uncapped 1 MB package @ R199 at the time. I was under the impression that the line rental from Telkom is only R150 p/m.

Could someone please explain the below Description on my Telkom bill:

June:

Your telephone line: R122,78
DSL Faster R253,51

Total: R376,29


Then in July:

Your telephone line: R36,83
DSL Faster: R76,05

Total: R112,88

June = one months billing for line & DSL Faster

July = pro-rata billing from/until cancellation date (check your billing cycle on the invoice).

Nope. Prices include VAT, as well as the R150 line rental includes VAT - source.

You are right about the pro rata billing however. My question is what is "DSL faster"? Is it a rental charge for the data part of the line? Is it a data package?

There is a note on their website:

"The Faster and Fastest offerings are available as a 24-month contract option that includes a free modem with a micro filter/splitter combo."

The thing is - I never signed a 24 month contract with them, nor did i want or got a modem... I cancelled the service in July.

My work colleagues pay R150 line rental per month for their adsl line and they use MWEB as their ISP... (R150 [Telkom] + R199 [MWeb uncapped package] = R350

I have phoned and emailed Telkom, and they could not explain to me why I had to pay for "DSL Faster"... so I cancelled.

You were paying for the Faster DSL option which is up to up to 2048 Kb/s, what you needed to get the cheaper price was Fast DSL up to 1024kbps.

The prices on your bill are excluding vat, if I recall the prices went up after June so that would explain the difference between the 253 ex vat you paid and the R263 ex vat on the website.

Tl;Dr you were paying for a 2mb line, but only needed a 1mb line.

What you should have done instead of cancelling was to downgrade from "Faster" to "Fast" which now costs R165 p/m vat incl. If you add the phone line at R148.37 p/m vat inc you would have payed : R165 + R148.37 to Telkom and R199 to mweb for a total of R512.37

Telkom adds the VAT at the end of the invoice breakdown on page 1, you are quoting VAT excl from the rental section (page 3 of their .pdf invoice)

You should have let MWeb do all the work, they're pretty good at it

I'm going to try again next month, but this time let MWeb do the work like you suggested!
