On the 28th of July I phoned Telkom to cancel my 3GB shaped account with Telkom Internet. I was informed that they'd logged the request, but the system was down and they couldn't confirm. I phoned them on the 29th, same story. Come the 1st of August I finally get confirmation from Telkom, and when I check my account online it doesn't work. Sorted?

On the bill this month, as ever, is the 250 bucks for TelkomInternet. I phone the accounts department who inform me that my account has not been cancelled, and as far as they're concerned I'm still a customer. I'm told to speak directly to TelkomInternet for a resolution.

20 minutes later, TI can confirm that a) the account was cancelled with them on the 1st, b) the account hasn't been used, and c) that I'm still going to get billed for it. At this point I can re-cancel, but I can't get a credit because there is no system in place.

I'm now waiting for 2:30 when I call back to vent my spleen once more

I've just been through a similar situation with Telkom a few days ago. I cancelled Telkom ISP to cancel on 17th because the billing run is on the 18th. I was told it would get cancelled straight away. I doubted this so I asked for a reference number. On the 23rd I get a call asking me if I still want to cancel my ADSL account. WTF???? So of course I'm being billed for an extra month. So now I'm fighting with them because I am not prepared to pay the R249 this month and receive a credit next month. I'm not paying double ISP fees this month. So we'll see what happens. But you absolutely have to get a reference number or you're screwed.

Yeah, i "cancelled" a TI account last week as well and I am pretty sure it will be on the next couple of bills. Why they do not have an online system like WebAfrica etc. I do not know.
They always have to make things as difficult as possible nothing just works.
BTW when cancelling they insisted that they could not give me a reference number, but I did get the persons name, so we will see how it goes.

Exactly, but even so,just dont pay them, let them send you all the lawyers letters they want, if you have proof you cancelled on a specific date there is sweet #$^%@ they can do about it.

Still going through the same pain !

Mine was cancelled on June 7 - been billed every month since then.
Telkom raised it to a "dispute" and I had a big fight on the phone with a Telkom person earlier this week.

I told them that I've been billed R750 more than I should have - From June 18 to current date. She said I'd get a refund of R200.

I said that's not good enough, because my current bill AGAIN has the R250 charge.
She said, no, that's just normal usage. Well, I had the bill in front of me and told here what it said, but she wouldn't have any of it.

Said she would call back after investigating further.

Bottom line, I'm cancelling my line mid-month (I was going to anyway) and expect to get a reference number and a signed statement indicating my account is still in dispute.

Until they bill me properly, I'm not paying them a cent.

And if it never gets resolved and I come back to the this country, I will NEVER use Telkom again - hopefully by then, the SNO will be in operation.

i.e. Monopolee can do anything it likes, ivy sits on er but and smiles "like me" and we're all stuffed like chickens for roasting.
Man I love this country, I really do. :)

It's pure farce. They admit that I cancelled with TI on the 1st but claim that according to their system it's still active with accounts. "How is that my problem?" I ask. General befuddlement and shrugging on the other end of the line.

To think that I intended to sign up with them again as of 1 November for convenience sake.

Was AOL USA not recently found guilty and fined for making it nearly impossible to cancel your dial-up subscription.

Maybe a lawyer can do the same here and make a name for himself:

(1) Get a couple of people wanting to cancel. (I'm sure there are plenty here)
(2) Let each of them cancel their service via the official channels (eg fax, registered lettter) and keep the evidence.
(3) Check month later to see if they were indeed canceled.
(4) Then take Telkom to court with the findings.

Lets hope they never have the online billing, I registered with telkom online to pay my phonebill, got my bill, paid online ... and then got a call telling me I am still owing. Telkom had no records of our payment, even though they took our payment, and the site says nothing beyond payment proccessed ( no reciept or anything of the sort ).
We had to get hold of OUR bank, get a statement with relevant payment and run after TELKOm, it was over a month before it was resolved, and then they still charged us interest for non payment and when we complained we were told to bring in all paper work and register a complaint ...
I admit at this point we gave up and just paid the interest, it was the only way to make the pain stop ( kinda ).

moral of story. Do not order from telkom ANYTHING that can be gotten elsewhere.

Back when I first got ADSL the only choices I had were Telkom, Mweb or Worldonline/Tiscali. Mweb and Tiscali both charged R100 or so more than Telkom plus Tiscali asked you to sign a 12 month contract, so Telkom was the only option for me. Things have changed a great deal since then. Thank goodness.
