Telkom changes ad

Remember that Telkom ad showing a house and describing the various activities the family members are doing (playing online games, using VoIP you know, stuff Telkom usually calls 'abuse')? The one that DVDA wrote a really good complaint in an earlier thread?

Well I was thumbing through the latest issue of the Financial Mail (2nd Dec 2005) supplement magazine "SA in 2006" and at the back is the same Telkom ad. Except something seemed a little bit odd. And then it clicked, in the old ads the son is downloading the Matrix. In the new ads he is, and I quote, "Andrew is downloading some trailers from soon-to-be released movies.".

Seems someone at Telkom finally clicked that along with the other activities that usually get labelled as 'abuse' (like playing games), piracy is also very bad.

I never actually saw that ad, but I think Telkom should have been outed for promoting piracy when that advert was first shown.

At CVS pharmacies, you can buy napster prepaid cards (among other vendors - itunes, etc.). Remember when Napster was the most evil thing around according to recording lables? Well, now you can buy "3 song" cards and up to allow you to download your choice of music for mp3 player, cutting to CD, etc. Guess that will never take off in this country what with Telkom running the show. It's funny to hear all the complaints about p2p. It is only illegal here because Telkom encourage it to be so... (my opinion)

Well, the kid would be a total moron to download The Matrix under Telkom's current pricing regime:

* Amazon.com currently have the dvd going for $9.97 [about R63 at today's exchange rate] .
* If `Andrew' decided to download a decent rip of the movie [say single layer dvd, at about 4.2GB] it would cost him about: R75*4.2 = R 315 [webafrica per gig rates].

Congrats to Rikus and Stevie: you dudes have created the only telco market in the world where it is more expensive to pirate a movie than to buy the freaking thing.
