I have asked this question before but have not gotten a straight answer.I have finished my local cap which is 10gigz.Local is not capped but Telkom has threaten to charge people who pass their cap.I have downloaded 19gigz and I want to know if Telkom will charge me.Is it a definite chance or is it up to them.I have heard of many people passing their cap by large amounts and not getting charged.Has anyone had passed experiences with Telkom and my problem.

It all depends..

Have a look at the contract that you signed when you joined them.
Does it say anything about paying for extra usage or are you supposed to be hard capped?

If you are hard capped then you could dispute any charges after the initial amount due to the fact that you neither asked, or agreed to pay for any more. (in fact you had a hard capped account bla bla....). but I think you're probably not going to be charged..

BUT, if you have anything that says you have an automatic topup or anything like that, you will be liable for the extra usage.

On the Telkom site they say extra usage maybe charged as they reserve the right to charge for extra usage and if they do charge will they charge from the exact point I passed my cap or will they be a bit lenient.

what stands out in their warning is the "This is with effect from 1 February 2008." part. it could be interperated as the amount you go over has been accumilating since then. short story -you will be billed, just not right away

What Srack0verflow says is correct, telkom tends to not charge you right away but let you think you are getting away with downloading locally, but once they reach a high exceeded amount they hit you with a big bill!, A friend of mine got a bill for R2100 or so which he is now obligated to pay..

i've heard various cases of people who are charged right away for their total usage, i've heard cases of people being charged for half their usage. i have also heard many cases of this accumulation over months that Darshur speaks of. i've seen people's bills of between R1000 and R6000!! the moral of this rant is DO NOT take a chance with telkom's local as there is a 90% chance you will be charged for every mb sooner or later.

But let say I have learnt my lesson and stop within my cap will they still charge me later, eventhough since I have not exceeded my cap again.I ask this because I had some bad experiences with dial-up (back in the day when I had 75 hours but used much more) my folks used to get some shocking "figures" in the bill.
