Telkom Closer 4 is cheaper than iBurst??

Well all I am asking for is timelines that iBurst can be held to.

Saying that we might get 2mbs sometime this year is not okay.

Saying we will get 2mbs by June is what I am looking for. Then when 2mbs comes out how much will it cost to upgrade our modems?

I don't want a sales pitch I want facts. Not sure what everyone else wants though :D

Better get all your ducks in a row soon since instead of gaining customers all you'll really be doing is replace the old customers with new suckers if you're lucky.

The 2mbps upgrade is not as important as cheaper bandwidth and a bigger cap at a cheaper price.

In fact how can iBurst offer 2mbps when it can hardly get most of it's customers to 1mbps.

Hey don't give away our trade secrets :D

Cheaper is the prime word for me right now....
Followed closely with real communication

Cap increase and more stable speeds at the upper band is what iBurst shoudl be looking towards.

As explained elsewhere, iBurst + my landline cost is R400 a month more than the order placed at 13:35 today.
Closer 5.
Over 800 ports available on my exchange.
Distribution point is 4mbps capable.
My line checks out ok.
Self installation.
Telscum is the ISP - 3gig.
No contract to be signed.
Theoretically, the 6 to 8 weeks should not apply.
Should be less.

It has now been officially 24 hours since I ordered my Closer 4 package. If I lived in the UK or US I most probably would be online already :)

My tech sais about 2 weeks..... So we have a race now :D

Speaking of implementation times, when I was in Atlanta in a few years ago, ISPs offered free computers if you signed up for a particular period and your account was set up as soon as you got your new PC running.

ISPs were also offering cash incentives for users to change loyalties. My brother-in law collects incentive cheques by changing service providers periodically. The change is effected in minutes!

Competition is great for the consumer. Pity we don't have any.

Telkom is quite incredible!

I applied for closer 5 on 19th Jan at 13:35 and was told I would be receiving an email advising installation date.

Later on the same day I called 10219 and queried non -appearance of email. I was told that I would receive another email in the event of the first email not reaching me.

Today I queried lack of email. I was referred to the Scheduling Department at 0800456786. Phoned at 12:36 and had the phone answered at 12:41. The consultant was Phadi. He could not give any rational answers to my questions and ended up putting the phone down at 12:47 and terminating the conversation. Very good customer relations. Very good for people with low blood pressure.

I phoned back at 12:48, and after the usual interminable delay, found myself talking with Tshepo. He emailed the techies to establish what the procedures were to get my Closer package working and got the answer while I hung on.

1. My application must go to "Designing"
2. It then goes to "Planning"
3. It then goes to "DAS Project Office"
4. It then goes to "Date Despatches"
5. It then gets back to "Scheduling Department"

At this stage I am supposed to be advised when my line is ADSL ready so that I can do my self-install.

All this bureaucratic time-wasting procedure when:

1. There are over 800 ports available where 1 has to allocated to me.
2. The exchange is 4mbps capable.
3. My connection point is 4mbps capable.
4. My line is 4mbps capable.

Regardless of the fact that the last 4 points can be established in minutes by interrogating the Telkom systems, we idiots who wait impatiently for normal service have our applications sitting in one in-box after the other whilst the bureaucratic wheels grind slowly on.

If anyone from Telkom can see errors in the forgoing, be advised that I am merely documenting events and facts as conveyed to me by Telkom "Consultants". I would be grateful to be advised of the true facts should they deviate from what I have described.

After this run-around, I dearly regret lack of competition to Telkom.

ADSL self-installation

@Mze
As ic told me in the self-install thread, Telkom collects email address but doesn't actually mail u back like they say they will. They never mailed me like they said they would either.

AFAIK, 0800 456786 is 'ADSL progress support', not the scheduling dept. If u get the scheduling dept number, let me know. I have an axe to grind with someone called Bonita...

I have spoken to Tshepo, Phadi and Ephraim at 0800 456786 with regard to my self-install woes. I can't tell if they are incompetent or whether the Telkom fault logging/customer relationship software is to blame. It could be both... Their supervisor, Mr Abe, never called me back either after 2 requests to speak to him and have him call me back. Only a complaint on HelloPeter got me any joy. Well, I'm still pissed off at Telkom but it's the lack of communication and mis-information that practically drives one to want to commit murder

How do u know that there are 800 ports available? Did they say so?

As to the procedures that the techies go thru to give you ADSL, I don't have any first hand info on that.

I can say though that it could be anything from 1 week to 3 weeks (or longer) before they allocate you a port. One warning though, Telkom being Telkom, just because they say they've done something doesn't mean it's done, and just because they haven't told u anything, doesn't mean nothing was done. Capiche :D

Check out the self-installation thread if u wanna read about self-install sob-stories. I think mine probably takes the cake since having ISDN makes my situation more complicated when dealing with Telkom-retarded Inc.

This seems to be turning into a Telkom ADSL moan topic... I know its asking alot, but isnt ths an Iburst thread?

that would explain the constant "hello sir would you liek to sign up for blah blah blah the entire evening!

Telscum vs iBurst

Its a draw! (For using smtp servers)
Neither one has functional smtp to facilitate sending emails.

Telkom wins! (For using pop3 servers)
I can receive emails via pop3.telkomsa.net.
I cannot receive emails via pop3.iburst.co.za.

iBurst wins! (For answering the phone. Telkom is perpetually engaged.)

I thought that I was covering my ass when I subscribed to Telkom's email hosting. Its terrible when both belt and braces fail - one has that naked vulnerable feeling.

I suppose that we will all be eternally grateful and relieved if all is working tomorrow so that we can get our businesses going again.
