We are moving to a new place and I going to upgrade to ADSL. I saw this advert on TV for the Telkom CLOSER Calling Plan 4, and it looks too good to be true. R499 for 384 DSL line, callmore calls under 1 hour are free and 1000 minutes include during normal hours. Normal cost for a 384 DSL and telephone line is about R350. This is R149 extra for more than 16 hours free calling during the day and basically free calls during callmore. My wife will use the callmore calls and free minutes to phone the parents, so that would not go to waste.

There must be a catch. I can't see on the website if this includes your normal Telkom line cost, but is must have the DSL line cost include because of the extra DSL connection you get more than the CLOSER Calling Plan 3. Does anybody have any info regarding this offer and what I might be missing. Thanx in advance.

I am currently on 384K + Closer 2. Costs are:

1) 384K Line R245
2) Closer 2 - R145

Total Cost - R390 - We get free callmore calls, but nothing free during peak times. Closer 4 would cost R119 more for the benefit of the 1000 peak minutes, which we really would'nt use. So, you need to work out if you're gonna use the 1000 mins during the day.....otherwise stick to Closer 2 + 384K Line and save the R119, which is almost the cost of a Cybersmart 3GB account.

I think the Telkom Closer packages are well worth it

It does include line costs. ISP costs are NOT included.

I know that :D I was just worried that they are going to add something else not listed on the site to the total cost or that the small print states that the normal line rental is not included in the package. Anyways, that for the replys.

I hear what you say. I will check with the wife, but i think she will use the 1000 minute, or almost all of the every month. She is very close to her parents (single child), so she phones then a lot. Closer 2 + 384K Line sound like a good idea, so will check the bill and see when the most calls are made.

Some what off topic: Which one would be best for a 140 square meter house with a Laptop, Xbox 360 and 3 PC connected to the ADSL line : Linksys WRT54G or Netgear DG834PN RangeMAX ADSL Modem/Router ?

The RangeMAX will be the best option, but I think you need to use RangeMAX cards on your nodes to really see the benefit of it.

I would try to get something with a detachable antenna, so that you could perhaps get a 7Db antenna for stronger wifi broadcasts.

PS : My wife is just like your wife! We live away from our hometown so she calls home EVERY evening. Since we have Closer, we are really saving heaps of money on our cellphone bills. :D

The Telkom closer plan looks good on paper...but there is a catch...

You signing a 24 month contract with them @ R 499 a month. You sure you want to be stuck in a 24 month contract @ R 499 when Neotel is commin in April?

I'm sure Neotel will be offering some insane offers when they launch that will be way better than the Telkom closer plans.

Stay AWAY from that Telkom Closer plan.... And be Proudly South African and move to Neotel in April....

No you're wrong...I just got the folks to take the Plan 4 and there is definitely NO 24month contract to be signed. The contract only comes into play if you take one of their modems.

Exactly. theres no contract involved which is y so many ppl here have them........if there were contracts involved i doubt too many of us would take it :D

so GET Telkom closer plans, compared to our ridiculous SA prices atm they are great deals.
