Telkom CLOSER Calling Plan 4

I'm on closer 2 with adsl 384 as well. Works out really great for us... My wife is like that too - spends on average between 20 and 30 hours a month on the phone, just to her mother. Never mind all the other people she phones... We just make sure to phone after 7pm, and so far, our maximum bill has been about R4 on top of the R145 closer 2 rental (she overran the 1 hour limit for a free call). Also, bear in mind that those 1000 free minutes do not apply to cellular calls, and check your calling patterns appropriately. We use our cellphones when we need to call someone on a cellphone, not the telkom line, so it all works out fine...

My point on this all is..

Why the vak must I take a new "deal" to get perceived lower costs.

Why can we not ALL get lower costs without any "special" deals ??

Why will a money grabbing bohemoth "give-away" part of its BILLIONS of profit in "deals" that make them loose profits -- unless there is a way that they are making profit out of the "deals"

The profit I see is from all the Joe-soaps who do not FULLY utilise all the free calls and free minutes - b'coz pals - u have paid for all those minutes up front.

If u dont use those minutes then they resell those minutes making double profits...naais hey?

Originally I was on no Closer package and the phone bill was between R900-R1100 per month (and that was with dial-up)

Then I moved to Closer package 3 with dial up, and phone bill dropped to around R700. (save alot on international calls too, as now use Skype-out)

Then Closer 4 came out, and now the phone bill is no more than R550 a month.
That is a huge saving, and getting MUCH more value for money. (I should include the fact that my ISP is about an extra R70 per month, but still thats around R400 saving)
And to top it off, I am getting alot more, broadband+international calls at around R0,17 per minute on Skype, and so many free minutes that I cant even use!

So definitely, Closer 4 has been the best move I've done!

I take it you still have to add an ISP charge to this package??? or is the dsl384 3gig standard or what???

Personally I want Uncapped or something high so the total package is still going to be quite pricey, eish :(

Most companies have a compare products page
why can Telkom not make it easier for us and give us
an option to see in a table format what is the difference
between all the Closer packages without selecting every
option and getting confused as hell.

I doubt if their is a [email protected]
email address at least they fixed the error on one of the
Closer options page that kept on pointing to an Internal
staging area website, before it was released for the public user.

Oracle.com was notorious for making many blunders like that,
always pointing to an intranet site.

Beware ordering this at Telecom Shops. Seems they have been trained to inform customers that Plan 4 and Plan5 can only be taken out on a 24 month contract. I argued with a man at Rosebank until I was blue in the face when I tried to order Plan 5. In the end I had to order plan 3 and 1024 DSL separately.

As soon as my ADSL is installed, hopefully tomorrow, I will be calling 10219 to have my plan 3 upgraded to plan 5.

if you had plan 3, and 1024/4mb, they automatically upgrade you to plan 5, and same for ppl with adsl and plan3 auto upgraded to plan 4. :)

thats what happened to me, and what the telkom person told me

I have almost halved my bill this month and am delighted with some cost reduction. Took Closer 4.

I am currently on 384K + Closer 2. Costs are:

1) 384K Line R245
2) Closer 2 - R145

Total Cost - R390 - We get free callmore calls, but nothing free during peak times. Closer 4 would cost R119 more for the benefit of the 1000 peak minutes, which we really would'nt use. So, you need to work out if you're gonna use the 1000 mins during the day.....otherwise stick to Closer 2 + 384K Line and save the R119, which is almost the cost of a Cybersmart 3GB account.

I also want to do the ADSL thing, as I'm currently on a R220 350MB deal with MTN. Seems like 350MB is just not going to do it for me anymore. 3G is okay, but also not a proper Internet setup.

Anyways. The above sounds good. Are there the dreaded setup/connection fees? If so how much. I'm not going to sign any contracts with Telkom, and would buy the modem online.

Feedback appreciated.

Does the halving of your bill include your ISP cap costs?? Remember they're not stupid...they know you're going to be buying loads of cap once hooked onto DSL...so their revenue stream climbs again.

All your monthly budget says is:

Telkom : R499
ISP: R180 (for 3 gigs) will cost more as you get hooked and leech more :D

stil cheaper than before for ppl already on adsl and that were wit telkom closer 3

Did you have to pay installation fees? It seems that with the Closer packages doesnt have any installation fees?

IMO: they don't give everyone the 'new deal' automatically because they score more bucks off the people ignorant of the Closer plans that way! THey would lose hundreds of millions instantaneously if it was automatic.

And as u say, they score off those people that do not fully utilise the plans...

It's the greedy/corporate South African way...

Confusion leads to indecision for us consumers which means we stay put on the default (more expensive) option for longer which means higher profits (theft/pillaging) for them!

Age old trick.. employed by the cellular networks as well. Actually all the greedy corporates...

Yes, there is an installation fee. The normal one for the telephone line. The closer package has no installation fee, but they see it as an addon to an existing line. So you're still gonna pay that initial installation. :(

Should not be any activation fees, like they will tell u, but Telkom constantly give u misinformation. When we activated Closer 2, there were no activation fees.

I have had at least a couple of occasions where they also completely lose all record of your order. It's as if you call them sometimes and your call gets routed through a worm hole and you reach Telkom in another dimension... But I digress.

Even when they get some of your order right, they may very well get some of it wrong... just beware! Don't bet your life on anything Telkom says.

This is a very clever move from Telkom. They make the entry barrier so much higher for Neotel. In addition to this, they start to steal business from the Mobile operators. We have just cut back our cell contracts and taken out a Closer 4. I recon we can save up to R1500 per month if we are careful. They also increase their guaranteed income.
