I want to bring the price of my Telkom account down and was told by a friend that I should take one of the Telkom Closer Calling Plans and he gets free minutes and his internet is on almost 24/7 and his bill is about R600 a month.

http://www.telkom.co.za/common/pricelist/prices/local/TELKOMCLOSER_CALLING_PLANS.HTML

I looked at this pricing structure and Option 4 or 5 seem to be the ones he was talking about however we don't phone many, if any, landlines as most of the people we know are only contactable on cellphone and our pc's are on almost 24/7.

Our line is a 512 and he said they should downgrade us to a 384 or is it a 386 line and we wont know the difference.

Will this work?

Wayne: the Closer plan only makes sense if you utilise the bundled free call minutes.

As you have indicated, most of your outgoing calls are to cellphone numbers, therefore I would NOT recommend that you go for a Closer Plan.

thanks Mr moggie thats what we thought too but i thought i would ask just in case there was another option.

I took the option that gives me the free 30 min anytime local minutes and free weekend local calls up to 1 hour per call. Also comes with answering service (you can choose that or identi call).

A normal analogue line costs R131 p/m with none of these features. This option I took is R145 p/m and the line installation is free.

If I went with the normal analogue option of R131 p/m I would have had to fork out R450 for installation. So it suites me coz if my alarm goes off it needs to make a local call to armed response.

ADSL and that answering service are not good bedfellows!

Is this on am ADSL bundled package?

I plan to apply for ADSL in July or August, so yes. I will get my ADSL through MWEB. I don't plan to use the phone line for anything but ADSL and armed response.

So you will pay Mweb for the ADSL line rental and for their ISP charges. And then pay Telkom tax for the analogue line...
