Telkom conceals true pricing

It is interesting that Telkom is able to halve their price for telephone calls and continue to make a profit. And this is just for telephone calls. Ain't it nice to be a monopoly where you can set prices to maximise your profit rather than be a price taker that maximises the social profit?

According to Beelders, more than 220 000 consumers have signed up for the Closer package since it was introduced a year ago, representing about 12% of the consumer market.

“We have not been very successful in defending our pricing structure and a lot of criticism has come from people who have only examined our list prices and not really taken a close look at our bundled offering,” he says.

Up until a year ago, the list prices were the only prices on offer, you utter mong. You've been getting flack from Thabo Mbeki on down for years now.

Exclusivity of the SAT-3 cable, of which Telkom owns 27%, is due to expire in November, meaning that customers could approach any of the consortium's members to obtain bandwidth.

SAT-3 exclusivity

“But that is not an issue. Telkom is ready for the competition and it is prepared to let it happen,” Beelders says.

"Telkom is ready for the competition" :p ........wtf sat 3 only expiring in NOVEMBER! :(

on Friday [tomorrow], the maintenance and construction agreements for the East African Submarine Cable System (Eassy) are to be signed.

WTF is this November bulldust? Every report I've seen up till now has said that come the end of April Telkom loses exclusivity on the landing stations.

Come the 1st of May if Neotel trucks aren't offloading switching equipment in Melkbosstrand then it's time to RIOT!

How can April suddenly become November?

Beelders must be referring to the Chinese calendar.

I was just wondering that myself :D

I'm glad to see I'm not the only schmuck who read November and did a double take.

Anyone have any clues?

It is interesting that Telkom can halve their prices like that. It does kinda speak of a preparedness for competition as they'll then be able to cut off chunks of price without hurting too badly.

AFAIRemember exclusivity was supposed to end 7 April. Now all of a sudden they have a 6 month extension! How, Why, When?

“We have not been very successful in defending our pricing structure and a lot of criticism has come from people who have only examined our list prices and not really taken a close look at our bundled offering,” he says.
FFS. We are not interested in your "bundled offering," just lower the prices across the board!!

(which is exactly why they have a bundled offering, so they don't have to lower prices across the board. Their "bundled offerings" make no impact on my phone bills, or calls; as I make few. Because their prices suck and I am already paying a fortune for dsl + two line rentals, one of which is a ripoff and the other I don't need!!)

//since when does a consumer have to spend 4 hours reading the small print (preferably with a law degree.)

South Africa: the country where you consistenly get less than you had before!! (and pay more for it!)

What happened to the consumer society where you are supposed to get more for less!?

Just spoke to the ICASA people and as far as they're aware Telkom's monopoly on SAT3 still ends in April. They were totally confused as to why someone would say November.

Telkom planting misinformation (oh, maybe no one will notice!)

Beelders, who yesterday announced he would be leaving Telkom at month-end after a 30-year career, says the telecommunications utility had come in for heavy criticism over its list pricing structure that made it look extremely expensive.

He says SA is on the verge of a bandwidth explosion as more and more demands are being placed on the infrastructure by organisations and consumers.
-
He says that Telkom and the country are, however, well positioned to cope with this explosion of bandwidth demand as Telkom has doubled its SAT-3 [one of the undersea cables] capacity and that, on Friday [tomorrow], the maintenance and construction agreements for the East African Submarine Cable System (Eassy) are to be signed.

FFS. Nothing MADE it look expensive. It IS expensive! Dumpkoff!!

Touch tomorrow. Yesterday. Or in 2010. Anything but NOW! Oh the greatness of telecommunications = 220 000 customers, ya, a phone in every home!!

More like a bandwidth IMPLOSION! Oh, they've doubled capacity. Pity we don't see any of that (in faster speeds or cheaper prices!!)

Big F#kkking issue as far as we are concerned. Dumpkoff!!

STD. Sick to Death.
