Around three weeks ago we applied for an upgrade of our Telkom line to 512Kbps from our current 384Kbps, which we've had since early 2007. However, a few days ago we received a letter from Telkom stating that they're sorry, but our exchange does not support broadband internet access. Huh? Either they don't know what they're talking about...as we have a DSL line...or they're admitting that 384Kbps isn't broadband at all.

Regardless, how on earth do I go about getting someone to upgrade our line, as clearly the people we've spoken to so far are clueless. I'd understand if our exchange doesn't support faster DSL, but that's not what they're telling us. 384Kbps just isn't cutting it anymore.

Thanks!

They're (finally) admitting 384kbps isn't broadband, now you can report them to all the relevant bodies.

Don't worry, I received a letter stating that I cannot get ADSL because of copper thefts and that I do not have a line 2 days after the installation of my ADSL...

Haha, well turns out I'm in the same boat as you, as 2 days ago I noticed my downloads were running at 50-62Kbps. I checked my router's sync speed and it was set at 512/256. So looks like they upgraded us after all.

Nutters have no clue what they're doing.

I upgraded my line to 4 meg and within 24 hours it was sorted, but took the funny farm about a week to know as 7 days later I was called and told my line had been upgraded. Oh so that explains the high speeds!!!!! In some (many?) areas they really are a bit out of touch!!

I got reduced to 128/256, for the past 4 days, It was so slow I gave up browsing all togather, it got back to normal today,

There are many different opinions of what speed defines broadband. But the FCC defined it as 768Kbps.

Thanks synapseZA

Huh? Oh well just shows how behind we are, but with the line upgrade announcement hope this will all change.

The alleged speed upgrade :) The 10/12 Mbps will happen, but I don't recall them officially saying that 384 and 512 will be upgraded. It was assumed, since it seems logical to do...but nothing about Telkom's way of handling DSL is logical. We can only hope for the best :)
