Take for example : A woman walks down the street. Suddenly, some guy grabs and rapes her. When she asks for help, the onlookers ask her if she carries anything for protection and then tell her it's her fault that she's being raped if she doesn't. In the same logic, She *deserves* to be raped because she doesn't carry any protection on her.

I know it's not an ideal example, but it's the retarded mindset most people in South Africa seem to have.

Back to the petrol thing. If you look at Zimbabwe there is a whole underground black market petrol syndicate. If these prices keep getting worse I wonder if the bw theft will increase?

It might, you never know. It's just quite sad the lengths people will go to in order to steal bandwidth.
 
That statement is COMPLETELY unjustified, if you dont have the money for extra bandwidth tough. I buy more accounts or be patient. Its not as if the people who are getting their accounts stolen are not in the same boat, they are getting ripped off aswell except by stealing from them they are getting DOUBLE ripped off and ending up having to buy another account because of being ripped off by the losers who steal accounts.

I hope that every single person who steals accounts gets caught, there is no excuse for bandwidth theft.
 
Do you get bandwidth theft in other countries like England and Germany?
I think not. And prices gives people more of a reason to steal bandwidth.
 
Just because there is a opportunity to steal (in this case adsl accounts) doesnt mean you should follow through.

Lack of jobs makes poor people therefore automatically creates opportunity for people to steal to survive

Addiction to drugs creates thieves so that they can buy more.

So to combat all this, drugs must be free, everyone must have decent paying jobs and internet must be free.

ALSO the only reason that your would run out of your cap is basically if you were downloading, 3 gigs relates to 100 megs a day. In otherwords you are stealing so that you can have luxury's. Using the internet for essential downloads, email and surfing you can easily get by on 3 gigs, heavy downloading you cannot. Therefore you are stealing so that you can commit FURTHER illegal activities. Two crimes instead of one.

Dont try justify your theft, if you cant afford the internet dont be on it or change your activities.

LOL it wasn't me. I'm just saying if telkom had to cut prices down there wouldn't be a need for this theft.

What a load of crap - Its narrow minded common variety thieves that exploit the lack of knowledge of their fellow users. Nothing more! .. Telkom has not created anything. The addiction to the NET and lack of self control created the theives.

I was not saying it justified the act, as I pointed out to antithesis, that a man who has crossed several borders to get away from an oppressive regime doesn't care how narrow minded you think he is when he tries to feed his family.

You can jump up and down and throw your toys out of the cot as much as you want, but that guy is going to do anything to feed his family.

The lack of work permits for certain foreign nationals or any type of decent political asylum or rights tends to create criminals.

I do not think internet addiction has much too do with it.

The cross-border migrant will most probably join a crime syndicate stealing cars, not highjacking ADSL accounts. The syndicate criminal has NOTHING to loose, and will take risks to get food, the ADSL criminal has everything, and usually understands that he will be in so much **** if he is busted with a compromised account.

ESKOM is a monopoly, but I dont see people bitching about 'Cheaper Power! My PC needs cheaper power', but I DO see the people in very deprived areas stealing power - not to power a PC, but for TV more likely. Now it can be argued that SABC created the Eskom pirate :-P

The average Bandwidth stealer are usually underage. They dont steal for food, they are common theives. You need to have ADSL to steal bandwidth - hence - already in the upper 10% of the population in terms of affording ADSL.

I would love to see the common theif here in the UK, some shops have 'Self Scan Checkout' counters where people scan their own shopping and pay using their debit cards. The Telkom creates the criminal is totally unjustified. Its like saying 'Durex is responsible for childbirths by making condoms so expensive'

Justifying an illegal act is 1/2 way down the slippery slope of moral decay.

I do agree with you, but bandwidth has for absolutely NOTHING to do with your argument.

ADSL is not on the list of things to get when someone runs across the Moz border.
 
Have you worked at an ISP? Have you seen the amount of fraud foreign nationals do when trying to connect to the internet? Do you have any experience in this other than your assumptions?

I have first hand ISP experience (one in SA and one in the UK) , and as many of the cases pending, the data is spent on 'Torrents' and 'Gaming', not 419 scamming. Internet cafe's are used for that. Bandwidth theft even happens in the UK (where most accounts are capped at 40GB, but advertised as *unlimited* >sic< )

If telkom are selling 'unused' accounts via the back-door, then this needs to be proven and the book must be thrown at them. but blaming a Technology provider for creating a new 'technology criminal' is madness. Blame microsoft for sofware piracy, as their OS is the common denominator.

Why buy an ADSL account when a SNMP walk on a range of IP addresses will give me as many as I want.

You clearly do not know what you are talking about RichardP, and frankly you are wasting my time. If you want to believe the majority of bandwidth theft and bandwidth fraud is used for torrents. Fine, I dont really care. At all.

But if you think there is more to garden variety bandwidth theft that El-Nino and global warming and the migration patterns of the earthworm, you are entitled to it.

but the bottom line is.. Telkom did not create the Criminal. the Criminal expoloits telkoms hap-hazard security systems to take advantage of the users. but then the argument can go to the fact that the USER doesnt lock his equipment down properly.

A Criminal act is a criminal act! there is no Justification for it. no matter WHAT.

A little true story for you.

There is a country in South America. A private company got hold of supplying water to this country. You could not even drink rain water without paying. It created a lot of 'criminals' (as you like to call them. I prefer the term victim), those 'criminals' then staged a coup de tat, and took over the country.

By your definition every single one of those people are criminals who dont have an excuse.

Not all laws are just and not all crimes unjust.

PS, before you get upset over this, bandwidth theft is bad, its wrong. But the problem exists because the current pricing module is designed for only 15% of the current population?

When I worked recently at a largish ISP about every single day we had one or two nigerians trying to commit fraud to get bandwidth. The whole time I was there I can only remember one case of bandwidth theft for torrents. The rest was nigerian internet cafe`s and other such foreign nationals who used the bandwidth for their voip services so every foreign national could phone home.

This is not limited to people just from africa. I remember whereby one account was used for voip services to phone Pakistan. In a matter of about 2 hours, over 200 calls had been placed to numbers in Pakistan with a stolen account.
