Telkom Customer Management Systems Upgrade

TelkomInternet will be upgrading software on our Customer management systems over the weekend of the 16th to the 19th of July 2004. This upgrade will not have any effect on your service, and you should not experience service interruptions of any kind.

We will however not be able to assist with product adjustments during this period. Unfortunately our online registration facility will not be functional during this period. All new service requests received through our call centres and customer services branches during this period will be attended to on Monday 19th of July 2004. Our technical support services will not be interrupted during this time, and our agents will be available to assist with technical queries.

This software upgrade will allow us to enhance our products and services, and we are currently working on exciting new additions to our product offering. Details of these service enhancements will be published on our web site in due course.

yeah well - rumour has it that a cheaper adsl version is coming - something like a 128k with 2 Gig cap - wonder how much cheaper if users will still have to pay the R680 line rental
 
Let's hope it isn't as the rumour has it. It doesn't matter how many times you divide crud, crud stays crud! All you will end up with is smaller pieces of crud. [;)] They need to give us more for less...

I'm also hoping this will be good news... however the fact that they are even offering a reduced 128k package makes me cringe. The faster the package the better value it should be (in theory). The cost per meg, should be reduced. With a 2gB cap at less than half the speed all they have really done is prolonged the cap...
 
128k is not broadband sadly, thus as has been said if u got a few big pieces of crap and u cut them into smaller pieces you just got alot more crap

Fantasy is what people want, reality is what they need.

I believe it is to be "somewhere between 256k and 512k"
 
In Britain there is war emerging..
Some ISP's have launched what they call 'midband' and as Bentley says it is probably between 265k and 512k. However at first the ISP's called it broadband so some gullibe customers would sign up.
 
If I can get 128K unshaped always on internet all in for say R500 pm I would get it... as long as the cap does not go below 4 Gigs! BUT I think it will be a looong time before such a service becomes available. Maybe 2030...

Also, I think the price that a normal consumer pays should be considerably less than what a business forks out each month.
 
Oh yes... and look how strong the Rand is to the Euro and the Dollar... I wonder how much the so called "expensive" International Bandwidth is costing Hellkom now? And during this time with all the telecom competition hitting the UK and USA... it must cost even less for intl bandwidth now than when Telkom added their 500% markup when ADSL first came out [lets not forget the unshaped service]...

maybe Hellkom are gearing up to be more "competitive" BUT with even longer contract durations to cut out SNO
 
People confuse broadband and always on connections. Broadband is an always on connection but an always on connection is not always broadband...

A 56K connection can be an always on connection. In fact that is what I suggest we get in SA for a start in order to get people connected. I am talking about the ordinary people.

People should be able to get 24/7 online internet with a 56K modem for around R200 bucks or less... No call charge!

Broadband might be slightly more expensive. I think an acceptable price would be around R500 a month or less...

This is what I've said all along. South Africa is being held back so badly because of the state of our telecoms. Can Telkom actually fathom how they will help in the development of this country if they introduced this kind of service.

When I lived in the States 10 years ago I used to pay just under $10 (R30 in those days) per month for my line rental, which included unlimited local calls. So, needless to say I stayed connected 24 hours a day.

Even if Telkom introduced unlimited local calls just to your ISP for R200 a month, it would boost productivity for small businesses, students and the like, in leaps and bounds. How can this not be possible to do?

Come on Telkom, before the SNO is up and running, why don't you save face by offering your customers a true sugar coated offering. Who knows, it might just save a few customers from changing over to the SNO.
 
i'm sure this would not be such a hard thing for telkom to instigate. it would not eat so much into their beloved profits since 56k residential internet users mostly use the R7 pacakge etc. i am now a sickly 22 year old who sleeps during the day and surfs the net at night since going online during the day is finacial suicide.

i really hate telkom and what they've done to my life. die telkom u self serving piece of maggot infested demon sh@t.

Yeah well - I tried to access their ADSL usage tracker this past weekend, but they'd obviously switched off their authentication server. Typical - the idiots don't see this as a service interruption. What a bunch of morons...

This is how I was for a long time. Because I could not afford Telkom's ridiculously high non callmore rates, I would work through the night and sleep during the day. Only problem is that I was not getting much sleep as I would have continuous interuptions. I got to a stage where I was completely run down and thats when I was forced to get Telkom's rip-off ADSL product. At least I can now get more sleep, but ADSL is a financial strain for me. There is a lot Telkom could be doing for the country, but they are not prepared to cut into their profit margins.

Its a very sad state of affairs.
