Broadband sometimes tests he main broadband suppliers in S.A for there averagage data speed. I am for a long time with Telkom on Data Contracts (broadband via simcards). Telkom's speed is over time just going slower and slower, I wonder if they have switched to Parrafin. I am currently on 3.40 Mbps Down and 1.62 Mbps down.

- yes I am in an area that facilitates top speed in all formats
_ using Speedtest by Ookla (Android App)
- and I do have a fast smartphone.

Do not post your exact address details or other personal information on the internet. It has the potential to fall into the wrong hands.

If the speed degrades over time then it may be due to congestion on the tower. Speedtest performance can also vary depending on the server you are using, try changing the speedtest server to an Openserve one. It is also recommended to use a wired connection since wifi can sometimes also be a limiting factor.

Check if your router supports manual selection of the 2300Mhz band/frequency as there is generally more bandwidth available compared to the other frequencies.

A lot of personal info has already been circulated on the dark web. For example

I think all Smart Wireless LTE packages are not throttled to 10mbps. I've also noticed a massive drop in the last month or so. Ever since they launched those new top-up packages.

This crap... I think they also only throttled to 10mbps.

I don't think they're throttling these prepaid bundles / SIMs.

Overnight, did some downloads on one of these packages you showed, and regularly got between 7 - 11 MB/s (using WiFi from router to my phone).

I did a test on 3G doing some downloads to check speeds. Got 20mbps.
So it looks like at 3G gives you better speeds than 4G(LTE) in my area now.
Go in the 60mbps+ before on LTE don't even see 20Mbps during the day now.

Fortunately, where I am, LTE's still significantly faster.

Most I ever got on 3G was around 35 Mbps, but the ping quite a bit higher as well than LTE - somewhere in the mid 40ms compared to LTE of mid to late 20's.

So Telkom 3G not much a proposition for me while 1800 and 2300 LTE bands available & working well most of the time in my area.

For some reason 2300 LTE bands not even getting me 20Mbps anymore. 1800 gets me under 10Mbps just a upload hitting around 20Mbps.

Maybe time to try out other mobile ISPs.

MTN might be a good option, even if you don't want to go the contract route.

Presume you're aware you can get them through Afrihost / Axxess etc.? ..... but with slightly more stringent T's & C's.

Also depends on how much data you need each month.

My main broadband connection's now currently MTN through Afrihost ; both Anytime & Night time data can rollover each month (for 30 days), which no other provider offers on MTN far as I know ? - a significant draw-card for me ; as long as you stay on the same package.

I have been enjoying (been subjected to) a blistering 1Mbps (one) for almost 2 weeks.
2 many disconnects to count, signal then no signal, used to always be full bars for years.

Logged faults on Telkom app, nobody even bothered to call back.
Have a Telkom B593s-601 router with poynting antenna with reasonable results for years.
Even redid my connections on the antenna as thought they were dodgey but same result.

Is there anyway I can force connection on the various bands with this router or is something else required.

Anyway, fibre is in town now so almost done with this.

You should find "Network settings" (or similar, like "frequency") in the router's settings.

If you do, try setting (saving) to 1800 MHz (B3 only) and 2300 MHz (B40 only), as well as "4G only" etc. - each one individually, of course.

Do speedtests for each and see if you get better results than the probable "Auto" it's set to.

Generally for Telkom (even MTN I find), the 1800 MHz (B3 only) should give the most equal download & upload speeds to one another.

Thanks BCR, been a busy week but will do some trial and error on the weekend.
