Telkom dead line repair time rant

As of 8:39AM this morning my adsl is syncing again, technician informed me that the guys in the exchange had disconnected the surge protection in error and this would have caused about 100 lines not to work!

As of next week I will be down for 4 months.....

They have restored voice to the line but still getting a terrible noise margin of 3.5. Internet is unusable.

Yikes, in which areas are you guys? Sounds like my rotten deal wasn't so bad...

Outage number 11474 opened on "2012-02-10 08:12:41"

Still nothing. This is the second outage within 3 weeks. My router is synching but at 128kbps (not 1MB) and my ISP doesn't connect at all.
There have been so many other outages which opened and closed withing this time :(

So I now have voice, but no ADSL. My modem isn't even trying to sync. Mutter, mutter, I don't even want voice, mutter, mutter...

Line & ADSL dead 3 weeks now .... from 30 Jan.
Story from Telkom is cable theft at the exchange and apparently they are not replacing cables

Let me guess, you also have wholesale ADSL (as in not from Telkom directly, but with an ISP)? Telkom's system is so crap that they can't pick that you have ADSL if you have wholesale ADSL. I was lucky to have understanding technicians, but they actually told me standard procedure is that they only fix the telephone line and then I should log a new fault for the ADSL.

No, I pay Telkom for ADSL line rental. But my modem seems to have died during the down time (26 days!). I bought a new modem this morning, and am up and running again.

I must give a thumbs up to the call centre lady I spoke to yesterday - a real honey. She escalated the whole thing for me and told me I can claim back from telkom for downtime. I see that my account for this month is R0, so I'm chuffed that that's sorted without me raising my blood pressure.

Guys, so it's been a whopping 5 months and no, our ADSL line has not been fixed. I called telkom today and have been told that I was getting the ****ty stats because I'm on some 'temporary' adsl line because Telkom will NOT be repairing our line because of cable theft, so they have been charging me and lying to me for the past 5 months.

I cannot even begin to tell you how unhappy I am. Evenmore, why are the paying residents in the Northcliff area being punished? We have never had any cable theft issues in the past 12 years we've been living here, and they simply decided to not place new cables because of this one case? Are they even allowed to do this? I am going on a limb here and asking if there is anyone who can help in this matter or who knows anyone who I can call who can help me out? Also, does anyone know who exaclty gets to decide these things? Surely someone must be making these choices? I've been calling the center numerous times but not a single person there was willing to help to even try and get this problem sorted. If Telkom decides to not fix our line anymore then I want my 5 months of downtime back.

I dont know if this will help but we connect to the Newlands 1 OCB283 exchange, maybe they can try and connect us to another exchange? I dont know if there even are any other exchanges near enough to try and connect to?

Also, I'm assuming that I can't be the only one on these forums who is affected by this issue? Anyone else? Maybe we can do a mass dispute on their decision to get them to replace our cables? Please if anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.

as far as i know Telkom will not replace the stolen cables in a lot of areas any more. I have a client who it has happened to recently and Telkom have basically just said they are trying to find a way to connect the clients wirelessly in the areas that have high cable theft. It might not be in your close vicinity that the cables were stolen, With your noise margins so low it makes me think that you are atleast 5km+ from the exchange which is hard to fix in anycase, could just be bad cables but even so 4km from your house is quite a distance.

Must be honest if they wont replace the cables you probably not going to come right here easily :(

What boggles the mind however, is that I'm currently on my 5th fault reference (plus an escalation number) as Telkom keeps closing my faults as 'resolved' while my line is still completely dead!

I am on my 7th fault reference... I experience the same thing. I've had a second landline installed to work around this issue and guess what, they are dragging their feet with the ADSL installation.

MWEB on the other hand refuse to get involved, so I am waiting for the 21 days to expire and then I will kick them on their backsides too

Sometimes (Most Times) the call centre agents lie!

I have regularly been told it is cable theft when it is not.

These call centre agents are the most ignorant people on the planet remember - Have you ever actually heard them type anything when you call in - I doubt they even know how to use the computer. They have a list of phrases to say to you when - and if - they ever answer the phone. I think it is taped onto the screen.

If you phone within 2-3 days of logging the fault : It always starts off with a technician or the technical team is working on it or has your fault in hand, if your line is dead they will be almost "always" be coming tomorrow - and never pitch??
Phone after 5 days: they always are escalating for you, try speak to a manager; if they are not on lunch, then there are no managers in today in or you put through only to get promptly disconnected.
After 10 days: it always appears to be a faulty card in the exchange they are waiting for spares from overseas???
Finally after 4 weeks and more : it is always cable theft with NO eta - and they disconnect you when as they put it "you are raising your voice at them" I mean just shut up and take it is their policy, hold back a payment for no service and they cut you like that, close all your calls and you have to start from scratch!

If only there was another fixed line supplier we could move to then service would be a priority for these pricks!

The truth is they have no idea what is going on, and when you use the status viewer on the internet it always stays on Logged???? never changes!!!! Ask them to read back the comments you asked them to type yesterday and they can't so in my mind they never logged / escalated anything!

Personally I have lost years of my life and thousands of rands on airtime dealing with the 10210 call centre. Even tried changing to MWEB and Afrihost - with their "we will manage you line for you scam" and inevitably when it goes down they blame Telkom and you end up back phoning 10210 yourself because MWEB and Afrihost both couldn't give a ***t about resolving line faults - its not us it's Telkom!!!!! What they mean by we will manage the line for you is that they logged a call and are happy to leave the status as "Logged with Telkom" indefinitely!

My 2 cents rant!
