On Monday I decided to order ADSL 384 from Telkom. Spoke to a very helpful young lady there who advised me of all the options and also took the order, clearly outlining that I had opted for a self-install.

Today I get this call from some guy to confirm the order. We go through all the same stuff again and he ends off by telling me that someone from their technical dept will be in touch with me within 11 days to install my ADSL.

Hang on, I told them I would be installing it myself. No, he says they have to come and do it because it depends on the exchange and free slots (or some similar nonsense). He also said I had ordered another jack. No, I hadn't ordered any such thing. Oh, well then the whole order will have to go back to the planning department. How long will that take? He can't say, but he did tell me that if they did the install I would have it within 11 days.

Something rotten in the woodshed? I think so...

i had the very same experience - but i insisted that if its not a self install i dont want to go through with the order.

they called me back after a week or so saying that they will call me and tell me when i can proceed with the self-install.

acting on the advice on this forum - i purchased my modem and self-installed before telkom called to say that my line was up

Telkom still "need to install your dsl" at the exchange: the techie is correct (you need to be plugged in for dsl - at the exchange.) This does not include 'coming around,' ie, they are 2 separate but the same thing. Yes it needs to be installed at the exchange but you are still doing a self-install on your machine... Once it is enabled at the exchange then you set up your router, ie, a self-install.

If telkom/or you changed your order (what was your original order no. and what was ordered,) - check! Then (I suppose you stand back at the back of the queue.)
