Hey all

I phoned telkom the other day to ask them whats going on with my adsl. I play css online and when i first got adsl my ping was around 70. I know thats quite high but im in Port Alfred so i guess thats to be expected.

Now my ping is round 120 - 140ms and its been like this for a month or so now. I phoned Telkom the first time and asked whats going on. The guy at the help desk told me that i should try search for a program that will make my adsl connection unshaped. Do these guys have any training? The second time i phoned the guy told me to turn my router off while he was busy doing stuff that side, he then also told me that i should make my account unshaped. My account had been fine for the first 2 months. Its only recently that the pings have gone bad. I told him this and said it must be a fault on their side because my friend is having the same problems and he lives on the other side of town.

After that he keeps quite for a bit then puts the phone down in my ear. I swear i almost got into my car and drove down to where ever those uneducated F#@$# are. Lucky for them i dont know where they are. Stupid adsl leaflet doesnt have a address.

The problem is that Telkom's network is becoming loaded and they do not have the network capacity to ensure a low latency. Their intercity connections are rather old (and especially bad in the Eastern Cape), and knowing Telkom I'm sure there's no plan to invest in better infrastructure anytime soon, just to improve their customers latency.

Shaping is not the issue. It's that Telkom keeps loading their network with more DSL customers without upgrading their backbone significantly, thus performance and quality of service is affected.

exactly, they just see more customers = more money and if you think that money will go into upgrades then ure in for a shock.

heheh if you really want to pay a visit to "those uneducated F#$@ers" take a drive through to cape town, as the entire ADSL call center for SA is located here.
Tower No. 2 of the Standard Bank building off aderley street, has a big telkom logo at the top, you can find these people on the 2nd floor (EBSC).
The other building is across the road, its the big old windowless barack street exchange building, Floor no. 4 (i think). :)

You will be doing the entire south africa a favour!!!
Good luck and god speed!!

Today my ping is 150+ its just getting worse

You would think a company that makes in the order of R6 billion profit, not income but profit could upgrade their ****ty legacy systems.

Be thankfull you are getting any latency at all. If you provide us with an address we can forward you a barrel of tar and a bag of feathers if you want?
:D
