Telkom Exchange Congestion

Lol soooo true ... Telkom don't care as long as u pay ... Wonder why none has brought a class action suit against telkom yet for their shoddy service levels and misleading reports..

I have the same problem on the Newlands exchange that feeds western Northcliff and surrounding areas. I am seriously considering going back to IBurst with their new 2 Meg modems it may well be worth it.

Alternatively, try Telkom's guest account:
Username: guest1@telkomadsl
Password: guest1

And see what speed this file downloads at in your browser. It's the server Telkom uses for their speed tests.

Does mweb have anything like that, I'm thinking of getting mweb but with all the talk about slow speeds, I think should test the speeds first.

Same problem

Ya i get that it is a 1 meg line "up to 4 meg" so that it is fine.

but the lady said they are upgrading my exchange to give me 10 meg ? wonder if that is a story or not though!
================

I have had very little trouble with my ADSL line, but that came to an abrubt end on Friday morning 4th November @ 08h41. The first time someone actually came out to me was Tuesday 8th. After some investigative search, I was told that it was a DSLAM problem at my local Exchange which is less than 2 Km from where I am situated in Northcliff Ext.9 just off 14th Avenue. My Exchange is in Dawn Street and linked (according to the search that I have conducted) to Aasvoëlkop.

I was on 4 Meg and "upgraded" to 6 and sometime in September to 10 Meg. Well, the first of the technicians that came out to me informed me that the lines in our area "cannot handle 6 let alone 10Meg and that our Exchange has not been upgraded to 10Meg yet anyway" and that he will have to down tune it to 4 Meg again. (I am a full-time Forex Trader and need speed, so can you imagine the surprise?) I asked him why the line did run perfectly until then and he could not answer me. I had to call him back the next day as my line kept on dropping so much so that I could not trade at all. This time he fiddled some more and the line improved in terms of stability, but the speed was appauling to say the least. I called in for another fault report only to be told that this guy had down-tuned me to 2 Meg!!!!! I phoned him directly and asked him about it to which he replied that he has a "directive from Head Office to down-tune any ADSL line to 1 Meg. When I reacted and said "but we pay for 6 Meg, his answer was a terse .."I don't work in accounts" (Clever boy, don't you think?)

The fact remains that I am still battling Telkom or is it Helkom? I have reported them to ICASA with all my Telkom generated fault numbers and escaltion numbers, but untill today still now word from them either. It seems as if this is the latest, nobody replies to you anymore. We might be in for one heck of a ride.

After what I have uncovered today with the kind assistance of a very clued-up friend in Gerhard, makes me very angry. Telkom has been stringing us along and taking our money for promises that they cannot fullfill. Also, from what we have uncovered, it is going to get worse and they keep on advertising for more clients so that we that are using the 4Meg and higher options, will continue to suffer.

I hope that we can collectively do something to get to the heart of the matter.

Wishing you all a blessed Christmas without Telkom hassels.

Hey guys.

few moments ago I just got of the phone with an agent who says my exchange has congestion. What can I do? He tells me the only way telkom can fix it is if they roll out fibre optic cables.

the problem only happens at night apparently.

better description of the problem with a lot of swearing from myself

Electro, it is actually very simple as to how the exchange becomes congested.

Take for example that the exchange may have like 100Mbps bandwidth. In the past it may have had like 100x 1Mbps users and handled it just fine. Now Telkom upgraded everyone from 1Mbps to 2Mbps and probably didn't increase the upstream bandwidth.
So now you'll have like 100x 2Mbps users contending for that 100Mbps.

Upgrading the exchange's upstream bandwidth is a very expensive exercise indeed. Telkom should rather just downgrade everyone one the exchange till the contention is low again.

Lastly, why revive this old thread!?

as in the 2megs go back to 1meg? I know it's expensive, but why roll out something they can't handle? I've been a paying 4meg customer for some time yet this is riding up my ar*e.

Vintage is good :D
