Hi

Well I recently decided to upgrade from my 384 line to 4meg after rearranging my finances.
After going to a telkom store I found out my exchange does not support 4meg and will only support it once the demand in my area increase.

Can anyone explain why the exchanges are not 4meg compliant/ready?

My best guess would be that you live in an area where they don't have much high data customers, so the demand for high bandwidth data isn't that high. Then, if they've got let's say 100MB backhaul capacity at the exchange, it would be more than enough for numerous phone lines, 384kbps lines and maybe even the occasional E1 for coorporate clients. But add a few 4MB (10MB now) users to that and the exchange's backhaul capacity can be filled very quickly. Laying fibre to an exchange previously backhauled with copper or microwave is a extremely expensive project, and will most likely not make business sense to them unless the demand in the area is high enough.

Had exactly the same issue at one of my staff's houses. He lives in edenvale and they also said the exchange did not support it. What you need to do is the following. call 10210 and request the upgrade. They will tell you that the exchange does not support it. You then tell them that you spoke to the technical desk who told you to have the upgrade done and they will then from their side (technical) play with the settings until they can get you on the highest link.
Took about 3 days for them to sort my guy out and in the end he was able to get the full 4mb line speed. It is not always an issue of the exchange not being able to handle it but more to do with the distance from the exchange. You can always downgrade again if it does not work.

Hope this helps.

Cool trick, but that then bypasses all quality control measures from Telkom.

The 4MB was not available for a reason, probably back-haul capacity. So now, the rest of the people on the exchange could be affected by this!

Heck, I would do it too :)

The DSLAM at the exchange does (must) support 4096mbps. If they tested your line it could be that their is either a problem with distance or poor physical cable.
