Root the idea is to get some China plant to manufacture generic
AP with Prism II chipsets (Senao uses prism). Linksys uses Broadcom.
The 13panel antenna's design sold by wisp-router are free. It consists
of a double sided PCB with four loop patterns etched on it. It is
trivial to manufacture.

If Linksys could be convinced to incorporate Locust mesh software into
their WRT54G you would create a 'disruptive' technology for Telkom.
Add to this our own cost produced 13dbi panel and omni antenna's
with clamps, weather proof box ect.. and you are looking at your very
own telephone network for R1000 per node vs. the present cost
of R3000, which is just to expensive for mass deployment.
An AP alone (no mesh software or Linux boards) just doesn't scale
and bandwidth management becomes impossible.

What about the transmitter/hub? Where do I buy a wireless hub?
What are the ham radio people doing? Need to add wireless to their 100's of
prime locations. Think Eskom would mind if we tapped into a street light

anyone interested still in the bellville/cpt wifi spot mail me im looking to set up my node on the weekend of the 15th august. hopefully everything goes according to plan.
Got a friend working on the omni's. him and his dad are hams so they know their radios. just imagine buying a 15dbi antenna for 500 bucks plus the ap to a total cost of bout a r1000 for a whole hotspot.

armitage, i'm looking at setting up a wireless ap in fish hoek. i would appreciate it if you could make some notes while your doing it so I can try and follow them. we could perhaps even get a FAQ/HowTo up somewhere on the net to help other ppl to get their towers up. imagine if we could link a small city to a town to a province to a country to a continent to the world!!!
