South Africa's fixed-line monopoly Telkom announced on Friday that it had filed its 2005/06 tariff adjustments with the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) - advocating an overall 3% tariff decrease.
The basket also includes the Diginet and ADSL products.
Sure would like to know how ADSL is affected.

Looks like dial-up users will benifit
The rates for post-paid local (50km radius) and long distance (national) calls will fall by 5% and 10% respectively.

An overall decrease - meaning somethings have remained the same or even increased.

Great stuff that the new price cap regime has finally kicked in!

People PLEASE note that Telkom is not decreasing their prices voluntarily, they have essentially been forced to by ICASA. This was supposed to have happened in 2002. It will take a while to undo all the increases Telkom effected between 2002 and 2005, so by 2008 we should be at the stage we were supposed to be at in 2003!

Lets hope inflation (measured by the CPI) for this year is low - the lower inflation, the more Telkom will have to decrease their prices next year.

Not as far as I am aware. Their is a limit on the increase on each item in the basket. AFAIK, this decrease has been enforced while taking the increases in January into account.... its hard to explain this, so I won't try.

Thats good to hear. As long as ADSL doesn't go up then I'm a happy camper.

Well there's a load of rubbish, for those that remember, a little while back Telkom sneak prices up and ICASA told them they were out of line and then things were going to be looked into.

Right so here we are, Telkom have gotten away with the price increases they were not supposed to get, and have had to date six months of it, the main benefit being they are making a fortune (and I really mean a fortune) out of local calls.

Now we know that Telkom are going to drop the price of ADSL by quite a bit, but they have their magic basket trick, which means that they can put other prices up, like local calls or rentals

Telkom drops prices, make sure you have insurance for rain damage

I wonder if the recent reductions in ISP prices will have any influence on the ICASA report? Maybe that's the reason it wasn't gazetted today? They could be changing what was a very hard verdict to something softer? Maybe I'm just paranoid.

Anyway, even supposing that the price of an ISP account remains steady at R199 (which it won't) the line rental is still way too expensive and any price reduction that Telkom announces will still be too small.

I would not be surprised if Telkom's price drop on ADSL is balanced out by them increasing line rental to R120,00 PM

Can someone get their hands on what the new tariffs will be - I have a funny feeling we are about to be caught again

Something tells me that when the SNO opens, I'm not gonna be jumping onto it anymore :(:(:( Which I'm kind of thankful for from the point of view that I have don't have to go through the hassles of changing. But the thought of not using Telkom, if the prices are worth it...... *goes into daydream*

It would seem as if everyone(except the public) has had a chance to review and react to the delayed ICASA report. There's been far to many changes in such a short space of time for it all to have been 'just in good faith' LOL.
As for ADSL, when Telkom drop their adsl rental charge wake me up and then I will applaude

Telkom dropped their Rental charge!!!!!!!!

However Ivy woke up from her nap, saw it on the floor, picked it up, dusted it off, and put it back
