Telkom firmware?

The firmware for Telkom routers are specifically designed for Telkom and won't often be found on other routers.
It might void the warranty of the router if you use non Telkom firmware.

No you don't need their firmware or their router for ADSL, VDSL or OpenServe FIBER. Is the Telkom firmware better? I doubt it very much; its probably just a lot quicker/easier for the techie to install (less to configure etc).

Telkom firmware just easier to use if you don't know what you are doing - if you know what you doing installing custom firmware is fine (to be blunt cause you are actually asking this question i would say you don't?) . - just not sure the reason it won't make the internet faster just better in terms of internal networks or QOS etc.
Of course if the Router is *** (and most telkom ones are , you get the odd one that's great) - just buy one to suit your needs
The Telkom firmware normally is more user friendly then other routers and have extra features like TR69 and VPN Lite.

I would say halfway right, the fact that the Pace didn't let me change the DNS without SSH was a bit annoying, it greys out the feature to change it.
According to another discussion I had, it does make things like setting up VDSL easier as it automatically populates the correct details required to connect for you (e.g. VLAN ID).
