10 September 2006

David Pincus

THE sale of state-owned land to the private sector promised about two years ago by then-Minister of Public Works Stella Sigcau faltered.

However, it seems to have started again, with Denel and Telkom putting some of their surplus land out to tender.

The timing wasn’t perfect: prospective bidders may have bid more had the tenders been called before the repo rate started its upward march.

Moreover, Denel may have got more for its seemingly choice properties had it not given prospective bidders only five days after publishing its tender in Business Times on September 3 to get their tender documents for a non-refundable amount of R500.

Denel’s five properties include a 12.3ha industrial property in Pretoria West with workshops and warehouses covering 56000m³, 52000m³ of which is let; two portions of land measuring 92ha, with one house overlooking False Bay in the Kogelberg mountains in the Western Cape near Hangklip; and two properties with a total area of more than 90ha near the Boskop Dam, 15km north of Potchefstroom.

It isn’t stated where those who already have their documents will have to hand their completed tenders in (on or before September 29), so it would be wise to get this information from either Pottie Potgieter at (012) 671-2644 or Japie Kriel at (011) 927-4238.

Telkom is offering nearly 50 properties in all provinces,
except Mpumalanga. It isn’t stated what they are zoned for but judging by their sizes — between 12.9ha on the farm Palmietfontein near Alrode, Gauteng, and 714ha in

Dordrecht in the Eastern Cape — most, if not all, are probably commercial properties.

The Western Cape offering includes 4942m² in Strand, 1118m² in Stellenbosch and 4 799m² in Swellendam.

Tender documents can be downloaded from www.telkom. co.za or www.tfmc.co.za.

Liezel Kruger at TFMC can provide more information. Her telephone and fax numbers are (012) 663-3973 and (012) 641-4264 and her e-mail address is [email protected]. All offers must be delivered to Telkom SA Limited, c/o Total Facilities Management Co, Meersig Building, cnr Lenchen and West streets, Centurion, before midday on October 13.

How about them giving it away for free to their existing customers? We have paid for it over and over again. I will even allow them first choice in leasing it from me at exorbitant rates as sitting tenants.

I always wondered what TFMC was.. no i finally know :)
