Good Day
I was wondering if anybody knows how to get something past Telkoms Call Centre.
So I will tell you the whole story.
I have been an iBurst 1Mbit wireless user for the last 6 years since my move from 56k.
I have used it as a reliable internet connection and I have always played games on it as well.
With the high demand for latency and bandwidth these days, I decided to move to an ADSL line to get some proper gaming in.
So I applied for ADSL at a Telkom Store. I was told that ADSL was full in my area and was not possible until an upgrade of the exchange.
Never the less, I filled in the ADSL Application not expecting much to happen within 6 months. I did apply for the 4Mb/10Mb
Six days later I get a call from telkom, advising me that they are on their way to install my line. I was impressed at this stage.
The technician came to my house and advised me that there was a cable fault on the pole and that he fixed it, but that he will come back the next day to install the line.
So the next day was Friday and nothing happened, so by Wednesday I got another call which tells me my line will be installed.
So the technician pitches up and installed the line(he did not exactly route it the way I wanted but ok I had a line)
I activated my ISP as a first timer DSL user at Telkom(for now). I also asked at the telkom store what speed I can expect in my area. The reply was 4Mbit.
First I struggled to get the DSL connection going, I called the Call Centre and they changed something. I rebooted my router and did all my settings and all seemed well.
So the next day I check the speed of the line, I noticed on my router that the speed is 384, which is not what I asked for.
So I went to telkoms website and typed in my telephone number, it returned that my exchange was 10Mbit ready.(Wow I'm ecstatic now)
I went to my dlink routed and see that my attainable rate is 10000 +- (this in my mind is also 10mbit)
So I called the call centre to enquire about the speed and was told that I will receive a call back in the next 24 hours.
No call received from telkom within the 24 hours.
I phoned again, I was then told that my maximum in my area was 1Mbit.
I had an argument with the person on the other line regarding this, as Telkoms own website says I am 10Mbit ready and there store says I am 4Mbit ready.
The person on the other line tells me that there is nothing she can do and that 1Mbit is my available speed. (even though I live closer to my exchange than some of my friends do and they have 4Mbit).
So I do a speed test, 1Mbit. Ok atleast I am getting there and maybe with time I will get the true available speed in my area.
So I decide to phone back to speak to another person about this. I am told again that my line is on 1Mbit, but they can atleast change it to 512.
I immediately advise that this is not what I requested and that they should rather leave it on 1Mbit.
I check my speed, what do you know. 512. I am so pissed by now. Phone back, ask and again they put me on a 1Mbit.
I decided to let it go for the weekend and try on Monday(this is now Monday).
I receive a call from telkom, they are on their way to my house to repair my telephone line. I advise that it is not the line that is faulty but the speed. I am advised to phone the call centre for that(which I did obviously).
About 15 minutes later I receive a call from my wife telling me that telkom is at my house, I ask to speak to the telkom person. Advise the telkom person about the speed problem and not the line(wondering if I will be charged for a call out which I did not want), again I am advised to call the call centre which I have done 20 times by now.
I receive another call on Friday around 3PM, Hello Sir, I understand that you are interested in upgrading to 4Mbit ADSL.
I advise the person on the line that yes I was interested in the fastest possible DSL in my area. I explained my frustration with everything I have done to get to where I am now.
The person advised me that if the Call Centre says 1Mbit, it is 1Mbit. I told her about the situation about their own website stating that I can get 10Mbit.
She sent me some forms which I completed and submitted now.
So now I am waiting to see what happens.
What is the use of going to DSL when I am getting the same old speed than I had on iBurst.
I also checked my attainable rate on my router the last two days now and it is not 10000 any more but between 18000 and 20000(20Mbit possible, I think they are try ling it atm).
So I was wondering, does anybody know a direct contact at telkom which can at least understand my frustration and assist.
This is absolutely ridiculous.
I am also wondering what they are going to charge me for all these changes and I havent even used the DSL yet. FFS. so frustrated with Telkom now.
