Hello all

I have a question for those whom have already dealt with FTTH from Telkom.
Our estate will role out FTTH and has chosen Telkom as the provider. Now I went ahead and checked their website for pricing and all I could find was packages with the line and "x" amount of softcap included and nowhere could I find the line rental separately.

Now the question I have is, must you use the Telkom bundle for FTTH if they are the ones rolling out the line. Or can I get the FTTH line standalone and use an ISP of my choosing for the data?

Thanks for any future reply's

Hi Piet

I am currently waiting for installation of my ftth (the actual in my house installation) my complex also went with telkom for ftth. Currently, nobody is offering "line-only" ftth. I have read that someone managed to do this with web africa, but this is unconfirmed; also something about CrystalWeb doing it but the price was a bit too high for me. I tried calling WA to find out but couldn't get through to them. Called Vox, Telkom, AH and other ISP's and the general reply is that they can't make profit from selling me only the line unless they put a profit on the line. Which I guess would shoot up the price...

Anyway, I went ahead and got my telkom ftth through ISPAfrika. Relatively unknown ISP who did WISP services in CapeTown. They offer Telkom FTTH, either monthly or on contract. I'm on a tight budget so got a 10mbps + 10GB for R469pm non-contract. This compared to the supposed WA R540pm "line-only". With that I am getting my data from Afrihost 100gb pm + unlimited night time data. And that works just like ADSL where you merely put the ISP details into the router. If i'm unhappy with AH, I just change my ISP.

There is no way I will get ftth from telkom at the moment, their packages suck and they don't have month to month at the moment. Worst case, if i wanted to i could cancel with ISPAfrika and get my line elsewhere, but that is unlikely to happen unless someone else is cheaper.

All I could really find on the subject that looked decent was at Vox https://www.voxtelecom.co.za/ftth since I am currently with Vox on a capped account, I will see if they allow me to choose a low data package with the 40mb line and then allow me to use my Capped 400GB account on the Fiber line.

How was your experience through them?

Well so far I don't have any issues. They submitted my application with openserve and when my installation is done is sort of out of their hands now. Telkom still have to do the installation and switch on the light. But from order to now waiting for a call from telkom. All went well. And their prices cannot be beaten atm, no matter how you restructure any of the other ISP's telkom offerings.

The smallest package vox offers is 50gb. In your case for a 40mbps with 50gb is R809. And then you have to add whatever you're paying for your current 400gb capped account.

With ISP afrika you can get 40mbps for 629pm and still use your vox 400gb data. Better yet, you can get a 100mbps for 729, still use your 400gb data. So you'll save R80 on a 100mbps ftth compared to the vox 40mbps package.

Going through ISPAfrika is basically the same as getting a separate line, and their prices are awesome. You can get a 100Mbit line for R729pm through them - everyone else charges R849pm. And ISPAfrika includes 10GB data, which could come in handy.

The best value for money for data is Afrihost imo. Their new network works great, and their R99pm Afrihost Plus addon doubles your data and gives you a Simfy account worth R60pm (and other goodies). Like many ISP's, Afrihost has uncapped midnight data too.

I'm waiting on a Telkom FTTH home installation (area installation complete) and went with ISPAfrika and Afrihost. For R1227pm I get 400GB @ 100Mbps - the best deal on Telkom FTTH by far I think. It certainly beats the bundle prices I've seen from Telkom, Web Africa and Vox.

And the Capped account is running at 100mb? On the Afrihost site is states Capped accounts only go up to 40mb lines.

Thanks for making me aware of ISP Afrika, they certainly do have the best prices around. But I have never heard of them before so that's why I was a little wary of them :)

Yeah their capped accounts run as fast as the line supports, up to 100Mbps.
