So yesterday some youngish dudes and dudettes walk into our company... apparently they are an outsourced sales/marketing team Telkom has employed to sell their FTTH service.

They met a few of my colleagues and gave them some pricing and stuff and left their details. Now i tried to get hold of them but one number is not available permanently and the other just rings....

Any of you guys know if this is true? apparently a 4mb fibre line + telephone line = R499? and you get 20gig data? not really worried about the data part, i'll use my own ISP, but hey, if thats the case then i'll go for it because my 4mb adsl + tele = R 564... plus i dont get my full line speed... atleast here with fibre the results should be better

Sorry to pounce on your thread but...

...apparently a 4mb fibre line + telephone line = R499?...

Why would you want/need a telephone line with fibre? Just use a VOIP service.

The deal sounds good, if true. Surely FTTH would have an installation cost though? It would be new infrastructure to your home, unless they intend to still use copper for the last mile?

thats what they offering, you cant take without a tele line...

apparently installation is free... thats why i tried calling these idiots!!

Sure, I understand. I just meant that fibre is standalone--it doesn't require a telephone line. But I wouldn't put it past Telkom to force a bundle (though I would've assumed that if they're going all-out on fibre that they would establish their own VOIP service).

haha... I understand. I hope someone will be able to help you. I'm very curious what infrastructure/setup they'd use.

i'll keep you posted

Methinks the OP's area has been cut over to a MSAN, so it is FTTC with fibre to the MSAN and then copper to the customer, i.e. a VDSL service.

EDIT: Re-read OP... company, you say? Then it is possible as it is currently a strategic thrust by Telkom.

Bottomline, ask them exactly HOW they are providing the service into your premises, copper or fibre and what "router" will you require.

if my exchange supports 20MB should it not support 40MB as well?

Depends.

ADSL2+ - Exchange will provision upto 20Mbps [where available]
MSAN/ISAM - 20/40Mbps

If it only supports 20 like ours do then no 40 until [IF] they upgrade :p.

/am too far away so no luck on my end.

@OP - Telkom releasing FTTH pricing in October so should be interesting :)
