For the past 8 months (maybe more?) I have been paying for a 4mb line BUT getting the following speeds:
ATUC Max Rate: 2048 kbps
ATUC Current Rate: 1120 kbps

This is effectively a 1mb line and I have been overpaying!

I have reported this to Telkom, they have "fixed" this, but nothing has changed.

I have asked why I am paying for a 4mb line when I asked for a 1mb line, and I get the run around. My debit order was set up for a 1mb line and due to this, it has caused my line to get cut off and despite trying to change the debit order on the Telkom website, NOTHING has changed. I have not even been receiving my accounts for the past 6 months, once again despite asking the 10210 operator to ensure that these are sent to me.

If there was an alternative to Telkom, I would GLADLY go for it because their service is bad, when trying to sort an problem out you get the run around and the accounts department are just downright pathetic.

That may never solved due to Telkom SLA:

http://residential.telkom.co.za/broadband-internet/broadband_services/adsl/index.html

"The DSL Up to 4096/10016kbps service has 4 sub-profiles, which are used to stabilize customers' service that experience re-synchs (service interruptions) on their ADSL lines due to last mile distance, noise and attenuation. Therefore customers that experience problems on the service may be accommodated on any of the secondary profiles below:

Secondary profile

min sync rate: 640kbps; max sync rate: 4096kbps
min sync rate: 640kbps; max sync rate: 3072kbps
min sync rate: 640kbps; max sync rate: 2048kbps"

The problem is: If you downgrade to 1Mbps -due to quality of the line- the line will run at 256 kbps (Down)/64 kbps (Up).

It all goes down to the distance between your place and the Telkom Exchange.

I had this issue with a business line before and the only solution is to get Telkom out of the way and go for some kind of wireless connectivity.

The main problem with wireless is that you require "line of sight" to their closest tower and obviously you require a lovely antenna in your roof. Installations costs are also a problem as they are not cheap (around R1500). Your connection is sometimes affected due to heavy weather (Telkom ADSL are also affected as their lines get flooded! it took two weeks to repair mine some time ago)

Check with Kawuleza connect. Maybe they can do something for you. Another option is Wimax from Neotel (I had that connection and it was rock solid).

Not so fast .. that's not always true.

I have the exact same problem. Had a well-functioning 4meg line for about 2 years, which changed to max 2mbps since a 'cable break' (Telkom's words) in Feb. Since then I eventually gave up on trying to get someone at Telkom to get my speed back up, and I cannot, just cannot listen to another minute of that f&^%$# Telkom hold music.

In fact my line has been dead the last 2 weeks again, and Telkom regularly closes my calls as resolved while I still don't even have dialtone. Funny thing is I'm not in the bundus, I'm in the next suburb to where the Telkom ooh shiny 40mbps trials are being held.

Telkom is like the ANC, the faster is dies the better the world will be and the sooner we can start repairing the damage.

Filing a compliant with ICASA tends to help get Telkom to escalate a problem to the correct channel
