Telkom IMAX - What is it?

Hi all,

I was hoping somebody here could explain to me with a little more detail what IMAX is and how good it is in relation to... well I don't know, since I don't really know what IMAX is. From google I have determined that it is the cable version of WiMAX, but that's about it.

Because I have been having major problems with my ADSL line, so Telkom have now said that they are going to switch us to IMAX to see if it does not fix the problem. Is this a good thing or a bad thing and what should I expect?

IMAX = a new type of DSLAM, which has the ability to carry narrowband and broadband services for wireline legacy and converged systems.

Don't think it's anything new......maybe they just gonna switch you over on a different DSLAM ??

No, they (or there contractors) are busy commissioning IMAX's all over SA at the moment. But for an interface issue they would have completed them about a year ago already.

So it is something new and it may actually give me a decent service so that I will have a working adsl line?

Does it even support a 4Mbit speed? Or will I be restricted to the 1Mbit I am on now?

The condition and length of the copper cable from your site to the telkom exchange will determine your quality of service and not the DSLAM/IMAX at the exchange.

The idea of IMAX's, UMC's, etc is to shorten that distance.

You will be at a slight advantage if you are on IMAX. It has the ability to provide VOD and supports adsl 2+.

The biggest impact is that the backhaul is connected to Metro Ethernet, which your standard dslam is not. I believe that at a later stage dslam's will no longer exist and all adsl customers will be cutover to IMAX.

I was one of the first users to be connected to an IMAX, and compared to a dslam it is much better.

When looking at the notifications I am glad I do not live in the Transkei as Umtata, Umtata 2, Engcobo, Hillcrest (SR), Idutywa, Maclear, Southridge Park, their must be a major router, Fiber issue with those DSLAM going offline
