Ordered ADSL 4 weeks ago for an existing line. Received a phone call 3 weeks later saying that the ADSL had been activated on the line. I told them I had already purchased a router, microfilters etc and that I would be doing a self-installation (in the hope of avoiding the R400 charge). I self-installed and everything ran smoothly.

A Telkom representitive phoned today insisting that they come and "check the connection". I told them it was fine. They said "ok" but they still needed to physically come to the premises to "check it", not giving a reason. I suspect they are trying to justify/force the installation fee... Is the R400 an activation fee or an installation fee?

DO NOT ALLOW THEM IN YOUR PREMISES .. TELL THEM TO CHECK ON YOUR USAGE .. if you allow them in for that purpose you will get billed for installation. They have ways and means to see, without going to your premises, if the self install is done properly or not.

I suggest you clarify that there will be no charge for those technicians coming out to your premises, if they say there will be, just dont let them in. If they say there wont be, make sure you get that in writing..

erm....
u have to sign a completion report.
u dont sign no installation fee

probably find yours is working better than everyone elses, and they need to
1) "fix" that "problem"
2) ensure that that does not happen again
3) all of the above.

When they leave hand them an invoice for r404 for your time.

Or, tell them
1) The next available appointment is 27 October 2006.Then call on the 25th to cancel.
2) When they arrive, make sure you are out.

I stalled them, said I'd be away for a week... They said they'd call again. Guess I'll have to keep stalling until the next bill, hopefully avoid the charge.

Its a game of Telkom and mouse.

Turn about is fair play. They feel vere for messing us around, so play the same game with them. Just be sure to tell us all the juicy details... :D

"TELKOMS BLINDING REALIZATION"
if they dont hear from you for a while your port in the exchange will become reserved. and u gonna have to reply for adsl again.
u are gonna have to call telkom and make K@K

Phone installations and ask what the order was + make sure(if necesary speak with a manager, take down name).. if it was self install and they say check is routine let them come but don't sign anything unless you read it twice and sure it does not say they did installation.

I called the people who initially arranged for the technician to visit my house and told them I was surfing online already. I simply told her to cancel the request fot the technician to come out to my house and asked her to ensure that I don't get charged the installation fee. She said 'no problem'. Just to make sure I also called the accounts dept and informed them it was a self-install.
If you get charged for the installation fee but a technician never visited your house, then I'm sure Telkom will simply credit your account after you've put in a request for them to do so.

Got through to a helpful telkom operator this morning (after 2 who "didn't understand"). He said it was "weird" that they'd want to check the line physically. He has added a note onto the account saying that I did a self-installation. Hopefully I won't be charged, though apparently its still a possibility even after noting the self installation on my account. If this happens, I can dispute the charge.
