Hi,

The past couple of days, the DSL link light on my router seems to be on for a couple of minutes, then suddenly it goes dead, starts to blink again and the process basically repeats. I have checked all the cables, etc and sometimes I can connect to the Internet but it only lasts a couple of minutes and then it drops again.

My phone line seems to be dead at the moment but I don't know how I would be able to connect the Internet if that was the root cause of the problem. I thought about contacting Telkom today and have them check the line but I am not sure whether the problem lies with my router or with the line.

Any help/ideas would be much appreciated.

Regards,

pokkie, could you post your line attenuation, noise (SNR) margins & actual sync speeed (ie 4096kbps down, 512kbps up) here? Here's a thread that explains those values: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=186156

You can find those values under diagnostics or the status section. Not all routers can show them, but most can.

It would also be a good idea to test someone else's router on your line, just to make sure that your router isn't faulty.

if your phone line is DEAD and your router is syncing intermittently then the chances are one of the wires from your phone's active copper PAIR has been severed somewhere along the line. DSL can synchronize over just the data wire if the ground wire is cut, but the attenuation will go up and SNR margin down (signal degrades) which would explain a very possible cause of the problem you describe. Bottom line: report the fault of your line - 0800 375 375 - tell them theres no dial tone and dsl keeps dropping

Thanks for the feedback.

Will contact them and have it sorted.
