Hi,

I see in another thread there is a blog "Telkom for dummies" or something like that is somewhere in this site that explains the basics.

Can someone point me in the right direction or at least give me quick run-down of the costs involved if I choose the "Telkom Faster" (4Mb line speed 40GB cap) option and if I also want a voice service.

There is currently no fixed line in the house. So it's a start from scratch.

You just apply for your Telkom Faster package, it comes with a voce line anyway.

This Faster package?
Excludes internet
Excludes line rental

ADSL has 3 costs:
1. Line rental - R189 - have to get it from Telkom
2. ADSL "line" rental - dependant on line speed, R300 for 4 Mbps line - also through Telkom, although ISP's can "manage" this for you (not worth it imo)
3. ADSL data account - This is your only real choice, capped/uncapped, with any ISP you want. You can stick with Telkom to start, their deals aren't bad (and with night surfer it helps for downloads), or something like Afrihost 50GB for R99.

So in total you will pay less than R600 (figures are off memory so might be a bit different) for 4 Mbps ADSL with 40/50GB data. Just don't take a contract on anything, you want to be able to switch with a months notice if required.

To save yourself the cost of installation you can get free installation by simply also applying for a calling plan.

The Weekender and Evening plan only costs R208 per month including line rental so it would give you free installation which is a big thing considering the installation cost is over R600 I think.

Correct, and you can cancel the calling plan the next month to go back to normal R189pm
