Hi All

I'm now trying to pin point my Telkom Internet issue, after sorting the Pots filter issue...a short on the Telkom line..., filters are fine....(see post elsewhere under technical)…

I thought that the excessive static caused by the short disrupted my internet access making it very intermittent,.. sometimes had to try more than five times before it actually finds an url and opens it, with “can't find the server at story.news.yahoo.com” the common error…

So is this an Telkom internet DNS problem or something with my setup…, which is possible, but this only started about a month ago, with no changes in my setup…? I’ve simulated this issue with the Marconi POTS router and also a Billion ADSL 5102SM modem..

Thanks for any advice..

So - you're trying to go to another url - say google.com - and it gives the yahoo error? Yahoo has their hooks into you somewhere - piece of software installed on your machine (probably through your browser)... clear your cache, dump your cookies, history etc...see if it clears your problem... clean your machine! Anti-virus etc. ... but basically - assume yahoo has installed something on your machine (find it and kill it!) (reset your browser security settings)... just guessing... exercising my fingers! :D

thanks guys...,

I've done the "visit other website immediately" on the error..., and it will open google and do a search with no problem..., have not checked the possibility of unwanted software, but will check if there is any UFO's flying in process manager...

will also dump history, temp and cookies

....will let you know...

ps... I’m pretty sure that I’m virus free..., but then who knows...

...you mean it will open yahoo(?) - would hate to call it malware - you have some small installation on your machine - part of a screensaver maybe even... somewhere yahoo has their hooks into you.

no kilo you misunderstood me...google works fine, its actually yahoo that don't want to load some times..., will continue to check for ufo’s

I've done the dns change (AdLo's post...) and could not regen the error last night but will continue...,.... first without cleaning anything as you suggested..., just as a benchmark

I’m running Norton Internet Security 2006… do a full system scan every Saturday…, report no baddies… also running Microsofts’ AntiSpyware Beta…, also no badd stuff….,however did start a second scan with with panda ( www.pandasoftware ) last night…., current score is…, now this p!ss me off...

Detected, Disinfected
Virus7, 7
Spyware 42, 0
Hacking Tools and potentially unwanted tools 0, 0
Dialers 0, 0
Security Risks 0, 0
Suspicious files 1, 0
Jokes 1, 0

just a report back... i think it is safe to assume that the DNS server on 196.25.1.1 and 9 is stuffed or did not like me...

the viruses reported above was in my archive files that were not accessed in the past 18 months (after a clean re-install of our "fav" operating system)...

another lesson learned, living a clean life does not imply that you will be invested by spyware... and don’t trust one solution like Micrososft AntiSpyware or Norton to protect you..., use the free scan services from other providers to clean your system from time to time...

thanks for your help ...

ciao
