On 22/06/08 I received an email from Telkom advising me of the
implementation of a spam filter. Spam mail gets quarantined and
and when this happens one is supposed to receive a quarantine
notification email containing a link to access, and if necessary, to
release the mail. Example below:-
There are 3 new messages in your Email Quarantine since you received your last Quarantine Notification. If the messages below are spam, you do not need to take any action. Messages will be automatically removed from the quarantine after 14 day(s).

If any of the messages below are not spam, click the Release link to have them sent to your Inbox. To see all quarantined messages view your email quarantine.
I have never received one of these Telkom emails. Has anybody else ?

(I have always deleted unwanted mail directly from the server, so this 'service'
is not important to me at all. I have not received any spam mail since 22/06/08
but also no quarantine notification ?? - maybe there is something quarantined
that is not spam, I have no idea.)

It is just the wording. It is the same for every quarantine message that you receive.
It would be silly to send you a mail telling you that you may have spam every time a spam filter thinks that the mail it has for you is spam. That way you would be spammed twice. The mail is just to say that there are three mails in your quarantine that you may want to check out. You can click the link in the mail to see the message headers and make a determination whether it is spam or not.
The point is you do not need to go and delete messages from the server any more. This facility is there to save you some time and to also stop you receiving any unwanted mails.

We are trying to make peoples life easier and provide a better mail service. There is nothing sinister in this :)

Sure, I understand what you say, but my point is that I have never ever
received a mail notification, and there must have been a fair amount of spam
judging by the the number of spam mails I deleted directly from the server
in the past - that's why I am interested to see if any other Telkom clients
are receiving these mail quarantine notifications on a regular basis - or, like
me, not at all.

Regards.

Sorry - let me just be a little clearer - In the past we had basic spam filtering where everything was kept - usually put into a SPAM folder. Now though, only the things that we are not sure if they are spam are not are quarantined. Definite spam however, is discarded. That is why you do not see as much mail.

OK, Thanks, that explains why I have not received the notifications - all was
definitely spam and therefore discarded.

I have to say that for once telkomsa.net got it right. Prior to the implementation of their new spam filter I was getting inundated with the crud (a major increase since the beginning of the year), although thunderbird was doing a good job of sending most of it directly to the junk box it was still a pain in the butt.

Since implementation I have received 3 spam notifications one of which was a regular newsletter which I flagged as "not spam" and now seems to be whitelisted. To the best of my knowledge nothing is being falsely detected that I am in the dark about.

Only ONE piece of spam has made it through and thunderbird detected that one!.
