Microsoft's monopoly and Telkoms monopoly are nothing alike. Telkom's monopoly is created, maintainend and enforced by the South African govt. Microsoft's monopoly is created and maintained by people choosing their products. There is no enforcing of Microsoft's monopoly.

You are talking about the 9x series. The NT kernal is a competely different kettle of fish and was designed from the start as a multi user core. It was also designed to run on top of many different architectures.Swazi said:

Please note I am not saying Windows is better than Linux of visa versa. Both are tools, and as with any tool (physical or software), it is always best to use the right tool for the job.
I had a LanMan box that took about 2 hours to set up on an IBM AT computer.
When we moved offices 7 years later we found it under a desk, covered in dust, and working away. The keyboard was dead and the screen was flaky but the machine had not been touched or powered down in 7 years and the OS was still running perfectly, serving a 10 user Lan.

I have travelled the world, and find South Africa as a country that has allot of potential to become a world power and leader too with all the talent they have, just hope the gov can see that too, and doesnt screw it up with their communistic and socialistic ideas.

Anyway this thread is getting a bit boring, just though i would add my last Pula.
Most operating systems have a common base including Unix, although it may have been around the longest. DOS was based on QDOS (Quick & Dirty Operating System) which used the UNIX syntax bur reversed the / too \.. C/PM also drew a lot from UNIX and was essentially a single user implementation, followed by M/PM as a multi user version.
The only unique operating systems that come to mind are UCSD/P system, FLEX and Turtle, all of which had similar tape/disk access commands to UNIX.
My personal favorite was ROM BASIC on the Sinclair (ZX80/81) that allowed you to embed HEX code in strings, and thus have total control of the hardware.
Alas we are in a field that moves so fast that we need to forget history in order to keep up and in the process we forget that mainframe and mini computers proceeded our own field.
