One of my colleagues was telling me today that he's just gotten ADSL installed (Home192) and the Telkom dude told him that because he's using Telkom ISP, they are upgrading him automatically and at no extra cost to 384/192! Is this for real? Has anyone else heard of this?

Maybe this means that they will upgrade his line speed to 384 for free, but he will have to pay the 384 line speed rate. This isn't much of a special because AFAIK Telkom will upgrade your line speed for free anyway :D

I just checked with him again and he says the Telkom dude said that they don't advertise it, but they upgrade you to 384 (at 192 price) if you sign up through Telkom ISP.

I have asked him to double-check his speed and also whether he will be billed for 384, but it sounds like either:
1. he is misunderstanding what the guy said
2. telkom has no shame.

Telkom are well known for this tricks,

Spoke to a guy I know at Telkom and they are encouraged to sell Telkom modems and Telkom Accounts.

Telkom probably have no more 192 spots at that guy's nearest exchange.

As far as I was told, they have to plug in cables at the exchange into the corresponding slots. Dont know how true this is?

I haven't heard of that but I have Home192 with Telkom ISP and I had noticed that I have in fact been getting a line speed of 384 not 192. Can't remember when it started. I'm still being billed for 192. I assumed it was probably a mistake, but of course not complaining.

A physical dslam port can handle up to 8mbit on adsl(1). Basicly, depending on your physical copper distance to the exchange, you can get 8mbit if the distance isnt to far(less than 1km afaik)

So ya, there no seperate ports for each speed package.

I do know of a friend that had the same thing happen whereby the techie gave him a faster speed than what he is paying for, in Joburg.

You have to remember as well though - that the line sync that is reported by your modem is not the same as your connection speed that they give you through the DSLAM.

I'm on 192k - and my download speeds reflect that. But my modem syncs at 320 kbps. If you check your modem sync speed - even on the higher speed products - its always a bit above the actual throughput speed.

i got 384 line but get 512 speeds, 54kbs max and telkom speed test 432 kilobits per sec.

he was probably trying to xpain the 320/192k line synch and took a convinient/incorrect assumption .. silly thechy should know better then. The line does however sometimes synch/glitch and give you 128k more sometimes. cuase like on a 192 line where max should be 20 - 24kB/s could get 33 - 36kB/s every now and then or longer ;) mebbe he did a speed test and was like wtfomglol. Best was is to check the line synch speed in the router/modem.. if its 320/192 -> 192 line, 512/320 -> 384 line, 640/384 -> 512 line etc

I installed a 384 line at home and after a few months started getting 512 speeds im not complaining either.. Get 54kbps on downloads and still getting billed for 384 and im with Mweb..
