So is there any mention at all of the reasons behind this price increase, or are we to accept it without asking any questions, like the good third world country we are? <i>"Oh I'm sure there's <b>some</b> reason for the increase! After all, they're a gigantic telecomm company - surely their actions are justified."</i> Yeah right. dream on

Telkom's statement: "Due to a shortage of money we have been forced to raise prices - you see, we at Telkom HQ are trying to build a landscape consisting of what Mr White lovingly refers to as 'money mountains', where Steve often spends his time skiing down the gigantic snow-covered peaks."

International bandwidth costs US$'s

Over the past year, the US$ has dropped quite a lot against the Rand.

See http://finance.yahoo.com/m5?s=USD&t=ZAR&a=1&c=1

International Bandwidth costs as well as the cost of new equipment must have dropped accordingly.

This increase baffles me completely.

South Africa needs World Class Broadband at World Competitive Prices.

Why is this so complex? It's really quite simple; Telkom is a business. The function of a business is to generate profit. By raising their prices, Telkom don't lose anything (or lose very little), and increase their profits. Quite simple, really.

It's like one of the Telkom guys said in a response to an article, "The reason they are very profitable is not because of their high prices it is because they are making Telkom more efficent.(and the more efficeint they the higher the prices go)" .... Telkom logic is so amazing, it's hard to beat.

This is a <font size="2"><b>massive increase</b></font id="size2"> - 13% on average.

Telkom published a full page article in the Sunday Times late
last year where they stated that there were no increases for
adsl.

ICASA - pay attention.
