Telkom Kenya raises local calls tariffs

Telkom Kenya yesterday said that it would increase local calls tariffs by between 40 per cent and 65 per cent from next month.
Telkom Kenya managing director, Sammy Kirui, said the rates had been reviewed because the firm would start billing calls per minute, instead of every three minutes as is the case currently.
Kirui also said the changes were meant to stop illegal termination of international traffic to the Telkom Kenya network, which led to a loss of Sh260 million between June and October 2004.
"The increase tariff charges have been partly fuelled by removal of subsidy."
Kirui said calls from post-paid subscribers would now cost Sh16.50 for three minutes from the previous Sh10, while calls from payphones have been adjusted to Sh19.14 per three minutes from Sh11.60.
Kirui said charges for calls from pre-paid subscribers would be charged after every six seconds and will cost Sh7.02 per minute from Sh5.50, while customers using calling cards will now pay Sh7.70 per minute from Sh5.50.
Telkom Kenya also reduced mobile call rates originating from its network by 26 per cent.
As a result, post-paid customers will now pay Sh19 per minute from Sh27, while those from public payphones will cost Sh24.25 per minute, down from Sh34.50.
Mobile calls made by using Telkom Kenya calling cards have been reduced to Sh28.40 per minute from Sh37.80.
Yesterday, Kirui also revealed that the firm would outsource the last mile line connections between the exchange and customer, which he said "have been very problematic".
"We have set strict criteria and targets for the companies wishing to bid for the business," he said.
The company has been on the fast lane of modernisation in preparation for offloading shares next year, partly to the public and a strategic partner.
As a result, the state Telco has been testing new products that use the latest technology.
Kirui said the company will next month inaugurate its Mombasa-Nairobi fibre optic line which would give customers quality and reliable services. In the same month, Telkom will rollout wireless services.
