Chatting to the DSL peeps @ Telkom yesterday.

They said that l should not go with any SA service provider.

The reason being is telkom is the only ISP that guarentees its bandwidth.
(un shared)

Every one else is "shared" and therefore @ busy times your'e fooked.

WOTWOTWOT??? This true?

(tried to ask mweb but their sales people dont even know what "shaped" is let alone "shared" and some how in the process of being switched to TECHNICAL l got through to ACCOUNTS and then disconected cos it was 1 minut past 5.
"HOW WERE YOU CUSTOMER SERVICE LESSONS FROM TELKOM? HUH MWEB?")

See if they're willing to give you that in writing.

Bwaahahahahahaha.

Teklom provides a best effit service - and they're the most [or almost] expensive option of all the ISP's - so - save a few bucks and stop thinking that you can phone teklom and say - "Hey - I'm only downloading at 30KB's on my 1024 line - I demand a refund." - cos you cannot phone them and demand that.

Once teklom provide Service Level Agreements and Garauntee's, then the ISP's will also be able to provide the same.

Like bwana said - get it in writing ...

From the Telkom bill insert this month:

TelkomInternet
As the most flexible, reliable and stable ISP, Telkom offers tailored Internet solutions, leading the way with new technology and always available services.
So, if you want your business to be taken seriously, start with the right ISP.

Why is there a "no" option in this question?

Contention ratio's is what it is all about. Consumer services will always be best effort if you want it cheap. Thats is how you make money on selling bandwidth. Sell more than what you have bought.

Best business contention ration for Intenet bandwidth will be between 4 to 8 times oversold.

Most business ISP's will upgrade a companies Diginet and Internet automatically once they average above 80 % of line speed. Because of network overheads etc. getting 64KB from 64Kb line is impossible.

ISP's do the same, they wont upgrade untill they are consistently breaking through the headspace on their connections. 100% utilisation means packet loss & resends and from there it is a slippery slope and a vicious circle.

Telkom offers best effort on everything even diginet, unless you are a direct diginet client of their VAN services like the banks. The poor VAN's have to build their own redundant networks using Telkom infrastructure and sell gauranteed services to their clients.

The kicker is that they will never get a reciprocal agreement with Telkom. And that is why VAN's and ISP's suck at Telkom' hind t1t.

Oops might have wandered a bit there .........

Yes, telkom lied...did you expect anything else from them? Go back to them, tell them to go jump (toned down for from viewing). Seriously try get what they said in writing. Telkom ISP contention ADSL ratio is about 164:1 (anything less than 150 and you are been lied to)
