Helllloooooo wise people. I recently upgraded my line from 384kbps to 4/10mpbs with telkom (when I applied for the upgrade, the woman said I would get 10mbps because I stay in Table View and I'm close to the exchange, 2.5km)

A few days later, I see that my line is only synching at 4mpbs. So I phoned telkom technical support, and I was then told that my exchange does not support 10mbps.

Then I tried the 10mb checker on the telkom site and entered my home number; it gave me the message saying that the exchange does not support 10mb. So I entered a few numbers of the houses around mine..

The number of a house, 2 houses away from me, on that checker, said that the exchange supports 10mb. The house opposite mine gave that message as well. But then the house next to me on the other side, gives the message that the exchange does not support 10mbps (the message I got with my number).

I did go to those houses and they are currently synching at 8mbps.

When I phoned telkom technical support, the only knowledge the woman had about my situation, is that I'm on "exchange Table View 2".

I would like to know is why my line can't sync at 10mb, and if my neighbours who can, are on a different Table View exchange, why is that when we're a couple of 10s or metres away. Is it all software controlled? Such as which line will run through which exchange for example.

I look forward to your replies!

Thanks

There are several DSLAMs in the Table View exchange, hence the "Table View 2" response.

They will have to physically change your cabling in the exchange to move you to a 10mbps enabled DSLAM; if ports are available.

When you do phone again, request an upgrade to 10mbps and request a reference number as proof.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I phoned and asked that question; after a few seconds of silence, the guy replied saying that my line cannot be upgraded to 10mbps.

So I asked if it were possible that my cabling could be changed to a 10mbps enabled DSLAM and he had no idea what I was talking about.

Then I said that houses around mine could connect at 10mbps and he said that the 10mbps are in 'pilot testing phase' and he said all exchanges support 10mbps but because its still in this phase, some people will have 10mbps, some won't.

I guess I'll just have to wait ?

This happens in several areas and I've moved house 3 times and has happened to me in all 3 situations. This exact dilemma.

No. Phone back. He was lying and he's an idiot.

Must I just phone them and ask for my line to be upgraded?

It seems like all the person does is enter my home number into some program, and it comes up on their screen saying that its not 10mbps capable, and the actual person from technical support has no idea what anything means.

When I ask a question about my line and 10mb, they just repeat what they said exactly the same as before, but it was completely different from the question I asked.

Maybe I should phone these guys every 5 minutes from 1am to 6am till I get a proper response.

Rather phone tomorrow... The call centres are not technical by nature, most are temps who read from pre-prepared replies to any questions. Your best bet would be to visit a Telkom Direct shop and to do it in person.

Be grateful that you still have 4Mbps and that you're not downgraded to 384k/512kbps.

Well I've only had 4Mbps for about 4 days now. I had to experience the slow 384 for about 6 years now :D

I am in Port Elizabeth - also eagerly awaiting the upgrade. Two of my colleagues' exchanges have been upgraded, but mine ... nope.

And the DSL Checker hasn't been updated since 14 Jan!! (Not that it makes a difference - my line is only syncing at 4mbps.)

Yay!! Good news.. for mE! Telkom phoned me earlier today (what a huge surprise that was, I really thought I was at a dead end with this), and the guy said he is at the exchange, and he is currently connecting me to a different DSLAM. So I waited a little while, my router connected again and it was sync'd at 6mpbs. Then it lost connection and reconnect a few minutes after and it was sync'd at 8mbps. So he phoned back and said all is kewl. I did a speed test and got over 7mbps. And then just tried an nzb file which went at a constant 815kB/s for a minute. He also said if I wanted to go to 9mbps, I'd need to go to the telkom shop nearby and send an order through but I'm perfectly happy with this now so i'll stay. So aren't you guys all happy for me lol. (just thought i'd share this to any curious people)

Awesome news!!! And it was as I assumed... those call centre idiots really need a kick up the arse!!

Even better news: I checked a few minutes ago and now i'm synching at 10mbps!

So much for needing to put an order through xD

Congrats. Now to do the same for myself in Constantia... And then to see if I can join CTWUG
