Have a friend in constantia CT. After entering ISP details, all works fine although internet speed fluctuates dramatically. After a couple of days the router has lost the ISP settings. Installed second router and exactly the same thing happens, works fine, few days later, router lost settings..
What can this be?

Looking at the ISP sessions, the connection is very unstable, keeps resetting every few minutes..but can this cause the router to reset?

Going to change the pots filter and see if that helps.

Any other thoughts?

Last resort would be to get telkom to check the lines properly. But still confused as to how a faulty line can reset the routers?...

Hi

I have had clients routers resetting all the time but that was sorted out with a different brand of router, as with your line issues, check that your attenuation and SNR falls within acceptable range, (attenuation should be below 50 and SNR should be higher than 9, telkom will say 6 but anything below 9 is really unstable). IF its not, before talking to telkom, you can first remove any lightning / surge protector on the phone line, see if that changes anything (faulty surge protector), then try picking up the phone and calling someone (POTS filter).

after trying both, if your line stats are barely (marginally) usable, you can try disabling ADSL2 / 2+ mode on your modem and force it to connect on G.Dmt, this can be done on the ADSL modulation page on your router.

Great advice! Thanks, will do the testing this weekend!
