Hi, what is the cost to install a Telkom line for a flat (Assuming the block of flats has the infrastructure).

Thanks

Unless you qualify for free installation if you take a Telkom Simple package for example. Not everyone gets free installation I believe they do a credit check and then advise you if you qualify for free installation or not.

Why should a flat be any different from a house? I paid R 275,00 for a new (prepaid) phone in a house recently (Nov 2014)

The conduits and everything are already installed and there is a Telkom cable that runs into the building that gets split up and goes to each flat. So the only thing they need to do is install a bit of cable.
+-R 750 odd somewhere there, then 2 months line rental - looking at easy R1700 for your first invoice @ 4mb DSL + Analogue of course
Do they give you those 2 months line rental in credit or is that the cost? I suppose that cost will vary depending on what speed you get?

My parents have a clean credit record so I can imagine that wouldn't be a problem.

I probably won't go through the hassle since I'll only be living there for this year but can I change from them and use a different ISP after I sign up?

Well there is 2 ways you can do it.

1. Get a Telkom Calling plan. This also qualifies you for free installation if you have a good credit record* Not exactly sure how the installation waiver works but it has something to do with credit record that I why I'm saying a good credit record.

If you take this route you will get a normal line installed and can then activate a adsl line with telkom or another ISP.

**This route takes time. You need to wait for the line and then wait for the adsl which can take time.

2. Get a Telkom simple plan. It includes everything from free installation, adsl line, line rental, free router, capped or uncapped account with no contract.

This is the fastest option because the phone line and adsl portion gets installed the same time so no extra waiting.

There is a slight catch though. Although Telkom simple is not a contract you need to use Telkom as your ISP for atleast 3 months OR if you decide to upgrade to a higher line speed they will cancel the simple deal and unbundle everything then you can cancel and change ISP's.

If you choose this option you could do it like this:

1. Place a order for Telkom Simple @ R399 p/m that includes everything and wait for the service to be installed.

2. Once the service has been installed call 10210 and ask for the line speed to be upgraded from 2Mbps to 4Mbps but only the line speed. They will advise you that since you are only upgrading the line speed they will need to cancel the simple package and you will be paying for everything separately as a unbundle product.

3. Once that is done you are free to cancel the ISP portion aka the softcap account and can downgrade you voice portion to a analogue only line.

4. End result is a completely unbundled service with a free router and free installation. Invoicing will be a ablosute nightmare so you just need to keep an eye on that if you wish to choose this way.

I got a Telkom Simple plan ... it starts at R500 for Internet and phone (2Mbps uncapped Internet and free evening and weekend calls to Telkom numbers). Free installation, free router, no contract, no upfront payment (you do end up paying double in month 2 to catch up for month 1, because Telkom bills in advance). Best of all, in Cape Town Telkom's techie came out to set it up within a week of me ordering it, no fuss at all.

Hiya guys,

I need some guidance... I recently moved to a new complex with phone cables rolled up outside :)

It seems that the Telkom simple package is no longer available, and all are on a 24-month contract :(

I am currently looking at the "do Premium" package that includes:

A Fastest ADSL line of up to 10Mbps download speeds.(1)

A Telkom Internet account with 50GB SoftCap monthly data usage.

Free night surfer data between 12am to 7am

& Includes line rental for R699

Any advice or suggestions? We rarely go over 45GB. I just hope that I will be able to get free line installation and the choice of not going on the 24-month contract (I have my own router)

Any better options to look at?
