As many saw, I'm busy builing my knowledge about adsl. I stay on a plot/small-farm(sorry dont know if that's the correct word) with 4 flats. about 20meters from me is the main telkom box, with the main line connected inside, that making it possible for all of us to connect whenever we want a telkom connection. I have a telkom line fron that box to my flat, but it isn't connected anymore inside that box. If I want the telkom line activated, will telkom then charge me for installation fee of R409 just to connect that wires, or will it be less because the line is already installed, but just not connected. I ask here cause I dont think I'll be able to explain this properly to a telkom guy over the phone. Thanks in advance

They will charge you the fixed installation charge.
You see, teklom still think that they live in the age of no-competition, where they think that they don't need to encourage potential customers to join before raping them.
Unfortunatley, you sound like you are in an area where there is no competition, so ... unfortunately ... you are going to make teklom verry happy with your donation.

Be sure to tell them that there is a line installed...its just not connected. Less work = higher likelihood of someone pitching to do the work.

As for the installation fee....The Telkom accounts department is like a black box...nobody knows what goes on inside. They'll probably charge you since you need a phone number assigned to it.

You'll get a good connection with 20m. Most people measure their distance to the box in kilometers.:)

Unfortnately, having a pair of wires going to a box does not nessesarily mean there is a line available. In some areas, especially rural areas the links from that box to the exchange are in high demand and will get diverted to other waiting applicants as soon as a line in disconnected or suspended for a period of time. These links may be a cable pair, a channel in a rural carrier system, or indeed any other transmission system. Add to that that the line is almost certainly not connected at the MDF (main distribution frame) at the exchange and that the telephone number is not created.

I suppose what I'm trying to get at here is that Telkoms methodology is not to prewire every house in the country with a line....whether it had one or not. Unlike Europe, Telkom, at least half the time, need to send a tech out to jumper MDF boxes, SDC (street dist. cabinets) and finally the DP (distribution point) most likely where you see your wire disconnected. (These are the diversion points where the line could have been used to route to another client)
So the R409 they charge could very well involve at least 4 technicians all travelling in vehicles each doing about 10-20mins work each on your line.
So for new line installations I feel Telkom can justify their installation fee.

Thanks, so I suppose the best then is to phone the devil, and ask them to come and connect the wires, and get connected. Then the adsl side I do after that. Thanks

So I already ordered my line, but there's no one free atm. But I ordered it. They told me the installatio fee is R420. But now on the telkom site, I saw the installation fee for a prepaid phone is R246. And some place I've read that if I order the smallest closer option, the installation is free. Is that true still? And can I maybe order the line to be a prepaid one, and once I get it, convert it to a normal one, or order the closer plan maybe, cause it's a good price.

There is the telephone line installation charge, then the ADSL installation charge.

The closer package I think includes both charges, so go for that (After confirming) but beware that they may want to charge you a portion of the installation fee if you cancel.

@Srack0verflow : The last time I asked the trained teklom help-desk dude, the answer was that that line rental is for the portion of the fibre cable and the Air-Conditioned DSLAM that you will be connecting to. When I asked him if my voice calls are also using the same equipment in VOIP format, he said that he did not know.

closer is free, I have had it installed twice now.

Thanks, I ordered the closer package, and instalation is free! And the next good news is my instalation is scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, after just one week! Wonder where they get lines now. They told me there isnt any. But I wont complaine. :D

Yes well I am suppose to also get my ADSL tomorrow (been waiting for a year now) So lets see what happens.

I hope you got your line as I still don't have my ADSL and there is about 1:30 business hours left.

Well, it's Monday and still no line. I called them friday about 1:30. The lady was very helpful and called the technician while I waited. He told her, there is some other underground cable fault, and it would take 3 to 4 days to resolve. Then I drove to shop and the they were, sitting in the bakkie sleeping the friday afternoon. Today I called again, and the told me the same story. So I'll post when I got my line then....

Ok so now after getting hold of Telscum
I am told that my expected installation date has changed to the 31 of January 2009.
this is now just over a year that I have been trying to get ADSL from then.
So now I will just cancelling all my accounts with them right now.
I am finish with bulls%$@
