Telkom Line Installation

Hey guys

We are in the process of moving and I am having a telephone line installed so I can finally get myself some ADSL! :)

My concern is that I don't want these telkom people in my home. I believe many burglaries are committed by these contracters that scope out people's homes while doing installs, etc.

I am very DIY efficient, so I was wondering is there is any way I can just get these guys to install up to my wall and then just plug into an extender outside which I will then run into the house? Something of that nature?

Even if they just get the cable going into my garage, I can take it from there I guess?

Any ideas?

Is there an existing telephone jack?

If yes, do a self-install.

Perfectly valid question. These guys get paid peanuts and there are bound to be a few bad apples there. If not doing it for themselves, they are a perfectly good source of information to their unemplayoed friends and family. This country is full of opportunists.

I'm paranoid about these things. Rather safe than sorry...

If you are so worried about crime, install a monitored alarm?! You can't go through life without letting anyone into your house to fix something!

Crime irritates me. So I stuck an alarm in and installed an electric fence!

I was hoping for some constructive assistance here. I am in the process of installing an alarm. That was not my question.

Who I choose to let into my home is my business, so if there is anyone with some actual advice on my initial question, I would really appreciate it.

Point taken.

If there are no existing jacks in your house then no, they will need to come inside and install themselves.

From memory, even if there are jacks, they often hook up a signal sender to a jack inside your house and then go trace it at the junction box in the street

Bottom line, move everything into lockable rooms for your peace of mind.

The technician wont have any reason to roam around your house, just close doors & remove anything of serious value temporarily if you're that concerned.

Have you moved into your new place already?

Perfect, thanks FlashSA, this is exactly what I was looking for.

If I have to let them in, I like our idea about just locking away the valuables for the day.

We're in the process of moving, but it looks like Telkom will only be able to come and install after we're in. I would have loved for them to come before we moved in!

Telkom no longer send out a "team" to do a simple line installation. A single fitter will be dispatched.

AFAIK there's nothing stopping you from requesting the jack be installed in your garage, then you can do a self install from the jack to wherever you need it.

Needless to say if your DIY isn't up to scratch (bad S/N, attenuation etc) Telkom will then charge for a callout and you'll be back where you started - "contracters that scope out people's homes while doing installs". Have to say I don't have any qualms letting Telkom techs onto my sites.

Thanks a million guys. You've put me somewhat at ease letting the tech into my home. I think I'll take the chance to avoid messing things up myself later.
