I know the meaning of uncapped is supposed to mean, unlimmited..
On telkom's site it says that after your international cap is finnished you get free local data, uncapped (on promotion)
I think it used to be 20GB limmit on local cap and if you used more than the 20GB it was R15 per GB extra.
I dont know if I missunderstand this but it seems like telkom is charging me for local cap i use over 20GB, so can someone who know please just let me know if it is that local cap is supposed to be free or if I'm reading Telkom's information wrong.
I bought myself a extra 1GB account from telkom that I used international cap up quick then I basically use the 1GB fo local only sites like youtube then I keep my other 10GB account for international cap, so far I'm at 54GB local data but, it seems like i'm paying for those local GB as my account is almost R600 more than it usually is and this account I use only for internet, no phonecalls.

Once you hit your cap on those telkom capped accounts, you get allocated a portion of free local data. They are supposedly not allowed to cap you on local data (but no one said they should give it away for free) so they decided to charge you ~R15/gb for it and give you a portion (20GB on certain accounts) for free. So yes, you will pay for every byte you use above that 20GB of yours.

Luckily there are ways to use your local and international data at the same time if you know what you are doing and are technically inclined to change your setup to work like that.

Yea I read a thread in here somewhere how to split international and local data, was a bit stoned when i read it so didnt still attempt to do it yet. I just bought a extra 1gb account at Telkom and used it for my local stuff, but only just realised you pay for local after 20gb.. guess at paying R15/gb local I might just as well get a uncapped account..
Now to find out which I should go for, think I'll start a seperate thread to ask for which uncapped account I must get.
thanks for letting me know, before I spent even more R15's on local data.

Mweb Uncapped. No doubt about it. Just read the 283478924 other threads.

Or a new up-and-comer (risky) @lantic uncapped bolt-on...

Thanks again for your advice, mweb suits me fine as I get discount on their stuff through family members working for media24.
I have read some people complaining about mweb thats not really uncapped and getting throttled at certain times or after certain amount of data? Do you perhaps know, if and when this happen and how bad is throttling. I'm still used to using a 384 speed line so when 1meg line get throttled to say 700kbps i hardly notice it. Also my average downloads is about 100gb a month..

thanks again for your help

From what I've seen you will get the best value from a Mweb uncapped account. The other options out there tend to cap you faster and throttle you more severe - mweb is seemingly more relaxed on their acceptable usage policies.

Re: 100gb a month
With mweb it is more about how you go about (ab)using that 100gb than how much you use. For example using SSL over port 80 can land you in booboo pretty quickly. As long as you do not circumvent their policies/throttling/whatever etc etc they should not be on your case imo.

Mmm, how to ask this without looking like a complete idiot...
What is SSL over port 80
I mostly use it to watch youtube and other online streaming, maybe download a few movies using torrent if theres anything interesting to download, say 2 movies a week and max of say 10 a month. Other than that i sometimes play online games and use facebook..

I think ld13 meant that instead of using HTTP (on port 80) or other protocols that aren't encrypted, people are using like HTTPS or other SSL encrypted channels to prevent the ISP's from shaping your traffic with packet inspection.

So as long as you don't force SSL/encryption with your download applications, you can pretty much download as much as you want on Mweb, because that way you're subject to their shaping/limiting.

@W0NDERBOY
I suggest you look into running peerguardian if you make use of torrents.

Spot on. People use encryption on their downloads to hide the traffic from the ISPs so the ISPs cannot shape the traffic accordingly. This is just an invitation to get yourself kicked from the network.

Ok understand bout the SSL stuff now :)

What is peerguardian? I'll check it out, if its some tipe of security software for when you download from torrents, I have a older dual core computer with 2gb ram and a completely seperate connection that i use for any downloads and online games, I dont use that PC for work or anything important and always tripple check anything I downloaded before putting it over onto my work pc. I have a anti virus etc. on my download pc, but if it gets to slow or get any issues I just format and reinstall windows.

Peerguardian tries to block eg. the RIAA/copyright companies from snooping on your legit linux iso torrent downloads. If they cannot snoop on you they cannot send your ISP a threatening letter that they are then forced to send on to you. Then you need to write back blah blah blah - skip the schlep and do it right from the get-go.

Just page sure you update the block lists used within peerguardian as the ones that ship with the program is outdated.

Then you'll be fine. Nothing to worry about.

How much is Telkom Topup a gig now, the site has changed and I cannot find the info AND it seems my credit card won't work because of something called a 3d security or something.

Last time I used them it was R64.76/gb - unsure of the current pricing.

Did you activate 3D Secure on your card? You need to activate your card before you can use it. Do you have a chipped Visa/Mastercard and with what bank is the card?

Thanks man.

The telkiom site is a nightmare and I picked up a spelling mistake so wondered if it was a legit site. I managed to buy a gig for R49 and my card worked which was a surprise.
