Hi,

Here is some more info that i was able to gather from various sources, Telkom has been developing a new billing system and when that new system is implemented then the local capping will be started as there current billing system is not able to implement such a feature. So what started as a rumor is becoming a harsh reality. This is not a official statement and i have no proof to back it up, just word of mouth. So if im incorrect with this statement i apologize.

Regards

And they're announcing it around the same time as their financial results.. clever.. imagine all the cancellations they're about to see.

Yesterday:
"our service is so good that when we brought out 192kb adsl we got another 10k users... whahahaha, we rule"

Tommorow:
"erm, i dont understand it! we lost 20k users! but we made the product better!"

Here it is confirmed by Steve White himself:

http://www.mybroadband.co.za/nephp/?m=show&id=308

“This will be a more elegant solution to this problem, although it obviously means that we will have to be more rigorous in enforcing the bandwidth cap, and the current situation of unlimited local bandwidth will also come to an end,” says White.

So that's it, no more unlimited local on ADSL. Which would probably actually make Sentech MyWireless the best option in ZA for local P2P!

Mr. White also says: “Meanwhile, for those clients who require really high-speed broadband, we will also launch our 1Mb offering in August.”
1Mb is "really high-speed"? Uhm, none of us are that stupid, we all keep track of international telecomms norms.

Telkom is a sick joke. One big, sick joke. And meanwhile our Department of Communications keeps deliberately protecting them, raping the economy, making the digital divide worse every day, and stealing from all of us to make people like Andile Ngcaba billionaires. I'm really sick of this.

BTW: If you have a contract with Telkom, wouldn't this effectively be a breach of contract? As they are clearly ceasing to provide the service the contract was signed on.

Signing a contract with Telkom is the last thing one should do.

I must say, I didn't think they can move backwards any more.... Now they are just proving that they can. Technology is supposed to advance. I just whish they could wake up.

I really don't see a reason for them to implement a local cap. They can't use the excuse that the connection is expensive, etc like they do with the international cap. So please, someone explain to me how they can even attempt to justify it?

Local cap to block VoIP.

anti-competitive
against constitutional right to communicate

driven by greed and the dark side...

That was an interesting question, that Turtle posed, what happens to all those people who sold their souls for a free router and are now currently sitting with a 24 month contract??? What are the legal implications of this?

Yes. Note that article also says:

“Telkom Internet will soon add a voice over IP tool to its offering, along the same lines as Skype, as an improvement and add-on to the existing service,” he says.

I expect Telkom will start to deliberately degrade all non-Telkom VoIP-over-ADSL services, so that they can charge "whatever they like" for theirs, i.e. comparable rates to current "monopoly pricing" call charges (that's their core revenue stream, they will go to all lengths to defend it).

Skype is free from IP to IP, so Telkom's VoIP offering has no value to offer that market. Thus the only way for theirs to be "better" is if they actively degrade others (some ISPs in the US already started doing this.) Of course, that's IP to IP; IP to landline and vice versa is something else.

How does e.g. Skype work over ADSL at the moment, btw?

telkom r closing all the holes...
tightening the screws...
and squeezing every last cent out of us...
the only contract we should take is one on TELKOM, and CAP their AZZ...

This kinda of tightning is going to hurt quite a huge number of people, esp those who signed up for no-cap packages from IS, AllYouCanEat, etc. It seems like the people who are running the show are not in any way dedicated in taking SA ICT forward. It makes me sick in my stomach that companies like Telkom can be so inhumane and only think of profits above taking SA forward. People like that should be shot and fed to the lions. Those capitalist pigs!

I don't have any form of broadband, I am not willing to dive down to their levels and it is sad that people who have ADSL have no choice, but to dive down to their levels and pay for a service that is overpriced and restrictive.

I am sick and tired hearing about Steve White and his definition of ADSL's uses - email and browsing only. Why aren't we hearing anything from government? Why is everything taking so long? There are people in the chain that aren't dedicated enough to get things moving ... FAST.

Ugh! Frustration.

Now I feel better.

why do you think the goverment will really get involved and try "SAFE" us people that have/getting adsl. Telkom like some people said is trying to close every whole they lose money, that is all they care about. The goverment get a huge amount of money from telkom. As far as they are concerned only the rich man can afford ADSL so they try rape all the money from us. All i can say is i cant WAIT to get out of this country, it is only going to get worse, telecomunications might get better because of the SNO and so on, but look at cellphone operators, their prices are almost identicle in most contracts/prepaid accounts, think now, do you think the SNO will try better telkom? Time will only tell, till then we suffer......... sad way to think of it

Methinks MyADSL.co.za should sign up for a 2 year teklom contract - 384 - 3GB.
During the signup process, each and every piece of the contract must be discussed and recorded. Then, when teklom change the rules, we strike and rip teklom to shreds.

If you are on a 24 month contract just stop paying. Its SA, 80% of ppl are morons, bastards, idiots.
What are they going to do, write you letters then send some unfortunate oke around whose ass you can kick...
That's what they all do and no ****heads who have strayed from principle and have not offered what promised have ever kept me in a contract...

We should really stop accepting the **** most companies try to get away with...

Mmm almost "home-time", have to go wait outside the Telkom buiding for my daily stress relieve workout...

*click* *click* there are my immigration papers... hmmm last open'd January 2005... just before i got uunet uncap'd... uunets offer has gone to the dogs.... telkom just got worse... im outa here.

Telkom are killing our economy. They are killing educational opportunities.

The local infrastruture was paid for by our taxes. Telkom disgust me.

They are trying to stop corperates from creating vpn's using adsl as opposed to very expensive data lines. We were going to do it forour smaller branches??
