Hi guys,
sorry to sound nooby but when you capped what are the restrictions on mail also effective. I am capped on my Telkom account so im using Afrihost to browse web etc. Now i can receive mail fine in Outlook but i cannot send any mail due to an smtp error? is it because of the cap.

Ive never been capped so early in the month so ive never tested it but my mom k@kd on me proper this evening.

Put smtp.afrihost.co.za as your smtp server. You will be able to send mail then. Put the telkom one back when you are uncapped so that you don't end up with the same problem.

If you have local available you will be able to send and receive mail via Telkomsa. You must then be connected via TelkomSA only, not both at the same time. This will be if Telkomsa is your default ISP in the router settings and Afrhost connected via PPPoE. If not use as per CZC post.

the telkom/saix smtp server only allows connections from telkom/saix account. as it's a local server it doesn't matter if you are capped or not. same goes for IS and prolly afrihost aswell

thanks guys! i tried the afrihost as smtp and it works great.
its just wierd as the Telkom account receives mail file but cannot send out at all.its almost as if outgoing is capped (smtp ). ag well your advice will keep my mom from k@kn me out further.thanks!

No, to prevent them from being used for SPAM, the SMTP (servers that deliver mail) only accept connection from the ISP you are currently connected to.

So Telkom's SMTP can only be used when connected to Telkom ISP
Afrihosts SMTP can only be used when connecting to Afrihost ISP etc. etc.

A POP/IMAP server only receives mail, so it doesnt matter where you connect from since it cannot be abused for sending. Although even then, some ISPs do lockdown their POP servers for their clients only.
